Roadrunner Transportation Systems has sold its intermodal business to Universal Logistics Holdings for $51.25 million in cash, the company announced Nov.
Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner are a duo of cartoon characters from the Looney Tunes series of animated cartoons, first appearing in 1949 in the theatrical cartoon short Fast and Furry-ous.
Last year, Roadrunner sold off three of its truckload subsidiaries, leaving the company solely with its less-than-truckload operations. This followed the company selling off its intermodal, flatbed and warehousing businesses, as well as subsidiary Stagecoach Cartage, after reporting a net loss of $266 million in 2019.
RoadRunner Auto Transport is not as highly regarded as other car shipping companies. It holds a C- rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with customer complaints focused on unreliable customer support and last-minute scheduling problems with carriers.
Road Runner, also known as Beep Beep, is a Looney Tunes character created by Chuck Jones and Michael Maltese. Road Runner debuted with his frequent adversary Wile E. Coyote in 1949's "Fast and Furry-ous".
Although commonly quoted as "meep meep", Warner Bros., the current owner of all trademarks relating to the duo, lists "beep, beep" as the Road Runner's sound, along with "meep, meep." Roadrunners inhabit the Southwestern United States, to parts of Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana, as well as Mexico and Central America. They live in arid lowland or mountainous shrubland or woodland. They are non-migratory, staying in their breeding area year-round.
Animator Chuck Jones introduced the comedic pair in the 1949 short film Fast and Furry-ous, produced by Warner Bros. for its Looney Tunes cartoon series. More than two dozen more episodes were produced in the 1950s and '60s.

Speech. Coyote usually does not make a sound, unlike Road Runner, who gives off the occasional "meep, meep." Instead, Coyote communicates with signs that display his emotion, such as "ouch" or "uh-oh." He has been known to talk, however, when he is around Bugs Bunny (In that case, Coyote was voiced by Mel Blanc).
