If you have a “merit” on your diploma, it indicates that you graduated with 2i, as known as second class honours upper division classification. This is a really good score, as most of the employers require you to have that kind of grade and above.

How are A-Levels Graded? Each A Level award, in each subject that a student has taken, is graded on a scale from A* through to E (or U, unclassified). A university may make an offer based on A Level grades, for example requiring a student to achieve a minimum of three specific grades in their A Level qualifications.

Is 70% a fail?
C - this is a grade that rests right in the middle. C is anywhere between 70% and 79% D - this is still a passing grade, and it's between 59% and 69% F - this is a failing grade.
* Average calculations will INCLUDE failed marks. All marks below 50% are considered failures. Failing marks below 40% will be included in average calculations as 40%, marks from 40% to 49% will be included as the actual mark reported.
In more simple terms it means that your overall academic score is equal or above to 70% of the total score you could have achieved in your undergraduate degree course. It is like saying your average grade at the undergraduate level was an A.
The pass mark is 40% and it is relatively unusual for students to regularly achieve marks of 70% or above (in fact, only 10% of students receive marks this high).
When you start at university, any mark over 50% is a great grade. Getting a mark over 50% means that you are beginning to understand the difficult work of your degree. Getting over 60% is excellent because it means you have demonstrated a deep knowledge of your subject to the marker.

Is a D at A-Level a fail?
An E or D is still a pass at A-Level - but it will result in lower UCAS points. A pass is indicated by one of six grades, A*, A, B, C, D or E, - where A and A* is the highest grade and E is the lowest. In order to meet the pass criteria, you must get an E grade or above on results day.
Within Level 2 grades, guides issued by various schools give the rough equivalents as follows: Distinction * (D*) = A* at GCSE. Distinction (D) = A at GCSE. Merit (M) = B at GCSE.

Near pass (N) – this grade is available on most Btec Nationals. It means that you may still be able to pass the overall course without having passed every individual unit.
The opposite can be said for the lower end of the GCSE grading system. Previously failed GCSE grades came in at grades D, E, F and G, with U being 'Unclassified'. Now, failed GCSE grades come in at 3, 2 and 1, with U being the only constant in the GCSE grading system.
