Lightly Sand With Pads and Paper

It's absolutely understandable why many clients inquire about staining the underside of their deck for added protection, but this is actually not a good idea. This is a less is more scenario. When you stain the underside of the boards you end up trapping water into them.
My experience has always been in only the face of decking being sealed. Should you finish all four sides, in particular the bottom side, you risk the top side wearing much quicker and water being entrained within the wood.
If you only stain “your side” of the fence, you're leaving the other side susceptible to damage. In fact, this may actually do more harm than good because you're preventing rain water from evaporating on both sides.
