Getting straight to the punch: Yes, ALDI does continue to beat Walmart on price in 2022. But, the pricing gap between the two stores has narrowed significantly in most categories, and Walmart has even moved into the lead in a couple. ALDI is still cheaper than Walmart in 2022 — but, the gap has narrowed!
Aldi has focused on US growth recently, and in 2020 it became the fastest growing grocery chain in the US. The chain plans to open 150 US stores in 2022, plus a new distribution center in Alabama. These openings would put Aldi on track to become the third largest grocery chain in the US, behind only Kroger and Walmart.
Here is what I found. As you can see, Aldi had the most lowest prices and Kroger had the least. There were a few categories where all 4 stores have prices within a dime, but only a few. Aldi had the lowest prices on two-thirds of the items on my master comparison list.

For our entire market basket, Sprouts' prices were about 10 percent lower than the average at all other stores, which makes it one of the few chains to offer below-average prices for above-average quality.
Generally, Sprouts is not better than Trader Joe's except they do have full-service meat & seafood and bakery departments. But Trader Joe's is usually cheaper, and unlike Sprouts does not carry products with artificial ingredients. But that's just a quick snapshot. And “better” is also a subjective term.

Although we were expecting Trader Joe's to have slightly lower prices in most categories, the consistency of these results was surprising. Trader Joe's offered prices that were between 14-58% cheaper than Whole Foods, and on average, Trader Joe's was almost 30% less expensive than Whole Foods.
