Cereal giant Kellogg's said Tuesday it suspended “all shipments and investments in Russia.” Headquartered in Battle Creek, Kellogg's employs about 34,000 people worldwide with a large Russian footprint.

This isn't Kellogg's first attempt to expand in China. The company bought Zhenghang in 2008 but sold the Chinese snack food maker earlier this year after a review of its position in the country.

The three global soda brands have been largely absent from Russian shelves since the Coca-Cola Company suspended business in Russia in March. While Coca-Cola products can still be found in shops, prices have skyrocketed by roughly 200% since the suspension.
Yum Brands is close to selling its Russian KFC business as part of its plan to exit the country's market, the company announced Tuesday. The company said it plans to fully exit Russia once the KFC transaction is complete.

The Battle Creek, Mich., company's first Chinese plant, in Guangzhou, in Guangdong Province, is producing corn flakes, rice flakes and wheat flakes for sale initially in the Guangdong region and later into other regions of China.
On June 21, 2022, Kellogg's announced that the company will spin-off three of its cereal, snacks, and plant-based food divisions. The cereal and plant-based food spin-off companies will keep Battle Creek as their headquarters and the new snack company will be based in Chicago.
The two companies will manufacture, sell and distribute Kellogg's cereals and snack foods through Yihai Kerry Investments Co., which is Wilmar's wholly owned subsidiary in China.
“We've suspended shipment of retail products to customers based in Russia and Belarus, and we will no longer be accepting new Russia and Belarus-based AWS customers and Amazon third-party sellers,” the company said in the blog.
McDonald's, Coca-Cola and other global food giants
Starbucks, PepsiCo, and even eponymous brand Coca-Cola will suspend all business in Russia, while Nestle has suspended all capital investment in Russia.
As of April 22, more than 700 U.S. companies have scaled back, suspended or exited their Russian businesses, including Starbucks, McDonald's and Pepsi, according to the Yale School of Management. Russia is Pepsi's second-largest international market, after Mexico.
Whirlpool joins other US companies that have opted to leave Russia entirely through a sale of their local business operations, including McDonald's Corp.
Caterpillar Inc. continues to use Russia as a supply-chain route, even after the company said it had suspended business with the country. The construction machinery giant's continued use of Russia for moving parts and equipment sheds new light on already-fragile global supply chains.

And they have no plans to stop. These Papa John's shops are primarily owned by Russians through a franchise agreement with a company controlled by Christopher Wynne, a Colorado native who has lived part time and worked in the country since the early 2000s.
"Papa John's has suspended all corporate operations in Russia," the statement read. "It has ceased all operational, marketing and business support to, and engagement with, the Russian market, where all restaurants are owned by independent franchisees ... "
Russia no longer runs on Dunkin'. The Canton-based coffee and doughnut company is halting “all current development and investment in Russia,” amidst that country's invasion of Ukraine, a Dunkin' spokesperson said in a Thursday afternoon email.

Just like Burger King, Subway released a statement last week explaining that it also is tied up in a franchise agreement that makes pulling out of Russia impossible; its 450 or so Russian restaurants, it said, are “independently owned and operated by local franchises, and managed by an independent master franchisee.”

In a recent announcement, Yum! Brands, Inc. (the restaurant group behind popular American fast food chains like KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell) updated international fans on its plans to remove franchise locations from Russia.
KFC is the most prolific American fast food brand in Russia with over around 1,000 premises across the country. That is followed by McDonalds with close to 847, and Burger King, which operates roughly 800 restaurants in Russia. There are also 130 Starbucks coffee shops and 50 Pizza Hut restaurants in Russia.
Meanwhile, just as many Burger King, KFC, Papa John's, and Subway joints remain open. So do Marriott, Hyatt, and Hilton hotels. One of the main reasons is the legal structure by which these companies run their Russian branches.
