SEOUL -- The South Korean entertainment company behind the K-pop sensation BTS grew its group operating profit 31% to 190 billion won ($159 million) last year as music and merchandise sales offset slow concert revenue. Group sales for Seoul-based Hybe soared 58% to 1.25 trillion won.
Per Hybe's 2021 financial report released in February 2022, the company recorded annual revenue of ₩1.2 trillion, operating profit of ₩190.3 billion, and net income of ₩141 billion ($118 million), a 58, 30.8, and 62.8% increase respectively, compared to 2020.
By 2020, the group was contributing $3.5 billion annually to the nation's economy, according to the Hyundai Research Institute. Even during the pandemic, which devastated the live concert industry, BTS drove a 58 percent increase in HYBE's revenue, according to the company's year-end reports for 2021.
The K-pop sensation makes up a sizable part of the talent agency's revenue, through album sales, streams, and touring. BTS alone made up 27% of Hybe's album sales in the U.S. and half of all album sales in Japan in 2021, notes Billboard.
It was re-branded and re-structured into Big Hit Music, and independent label under Hybe Corporation (formerly Big Hit Entertainment Co. Ltd.,) and part of Hybe Labels on March 2021. As of date, the label is home to soloist Lee Hyun, and boy groups BTS and Tomorrow X Together.
