How much of Wells Fargo does Warren Buffett Own?
Warren Buffett and his company Berkshire Hathaway (BRK. A 2.19%) (BRK. B 2.28%) recently disclosed that they sold off their last remaining holdings of Wells Fargo (WFC 1.27%) in the first quarter of 2022.
Berkshire still owned a tiny stake in Wells Fargo as of the end of the fourth quarter of 2021, but had been cutting the position gradually since 2019. Many Berkshire investors had been pressuring the company to sell all its holdings in the bank, arguing that its continuing problems were a stain on Berkshire.
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway missed out on about $10 billion of gains by dumping its Wells Fargo stock in 2020 and early 2021. The famed investor's company owned 346 million Wells Fargo shares at the end of 2019, giving it a 8.4% stake in the bank.
Apple Inc.
Apple is the world's most valuable public company and Warren Buffet's largest stock holding.
The stock is down nearly 20% for the year amid a broader stock market slump. Berkshire exited Wells Fargo as the bank continues to deal with regulatory issues and attempts to improve efficiencies, which include job cuts and the possible sale of some of its businesses, Bloomberg reported.
WFC stock is at best fairly valued now, if not slightly overvalued. Based on the stock's last traded share price of $49.33 as of April 11, 2022, Wells Fargo is now valued by the market at 12.4 times consensus forward FY 2022 P/E as per financial data sourced from S&P Capital IQ.
Wells Fargo expects its net interest income to increase by $2.9 billion in 2022. Management also expects expenses to decline by $2.3 billion. Management said they expect to increase gross cost savings of $8 billion to $10 billion from the bank's multiyear plan.
The current dividend yield of Wells Fargo is 1.24%. The credit risk and commercial loan activity are improving in 2021, combating the negative impact of COVID-19 on stocks. Investing in Wells Fargo seems like a beneficial investment because it has excellent credit quality and net charge-offs.
