Wood Color Change – Water Based vs Oil Based Polyurethane
An oil based polyurethane will continue to amber and darken over time, while water based poly will remain clear for the lifetime of the hardwood floor. This color difference is less noticeable over a stained hardwood floor, but an oil based poly will still exhibit an amber hue that will continue to darken over time.
Polyurethane wood finish offers durability and water resistance. This makes it a popular alternative to more traditional coatings such as shellac or lacquer. Learning how to apply polyurethane to wood can enhance the appearance of the stain. It will also protect the surface from scratches and more.
Those in the latter camp must content themselves with the fact that finishes of any type – poly, shellac, lacquer, wax – all change the wood's appearance. While they accentuate the grain and beauty of the wood, they also darken and deepen its color. This is usually a good thing. But not always.
After applying wood stain, it's a good idea to seal it with polyurethane to protect your project.
Oil-Based. ZAR Interior Oil Base Poly is an ultrafast-drying, oil-based polyurethane that dries to a smooth finish on bare wood in just two hours and leaves no brush marks. It has a tough, abrasion-resistant finish and self-leveling properties, making it ideal for hardwood floors, cabinets, furniture and woodwork.
How to Apply Polyurethane: When working with any finish. Use natural bristle for oil-based finishes and synthetic filament (polyester, nylon, or a blend of the two) for water-based and water-based oil-modified finishes. Don't use rollers or foam brushes—they create bubbles.

While staining creates a rich, deep color that highlights natural wood grain, it does not provide long-term protection. Without a protective top coat, wood can be damaged easily due to contact with water, food, or sharp objects. A polyurethane top coat protects the wood from scratches, stains and water damage.
One of my all-time favorite finishes is Sherwin Williams CAB-acrylic lacquer, which imparts little to no color to the wood.
What sealer won't darken wood?
Water-based finishes, which are acrylics, give the wood no color nor do they darken as they age. They work well on lighter woods such as maple, birch or pine. If finishing a darker wood, such as walnut, mahogany or cherry, then one of the other finishes such as shellac or lacquer is better.
Water-based Polyurethane Finishes
Most water-based finishes dry clear and do not change color over time. The “yellowing” of the floor's color often seen with oil-based polyurethanes won't happen with water-based.
Varnish is one of the best wood finishes on the market. Not only does it give your furniture and floors a high-glossy appearance, but it also protects your surfaces from scratches, stains, and water damage. While varnish is available in a variety of shades, it is typically clear or has very little color.
Wax, oil and varnish are three materials that will protect your furniture and that you can easily apply at home yourself. The three options will maintain the most "natural" aspect of the furniture, preserving the grain of the wood without adding big touches of colour, as paints, lacquers, etc. would do.
water based: can last around 10 years when high quality product is applied by professionals, inexpensive lower quality product may last only 5-6 years. Water based is harder which offers greater dent resistance. oil based: generally lasts around 10 years. Oil based is softer which can offer greater scratch resistance.
How Long Does It Take For Polyurethane To Dry? After application, oil-based urethanes take about 24 hours to dry, while water-based urethanes require six hours of dry time. However, there's a significant difference between dry time and cure time.
The problem is that the stain is not fully dry. The solvent in the stain and the poly are similar and will dissolve each other b4 fully dry.
Shellac – Shellac is a varnish made from the resin of the lac bug. It is a softer finish that is often recommended for lighter-colored woods. It is also better for areas with high moisture and frequent wear, as it dries much faster than polyurethane.
Instructions for Applying Your Polyurethane Finish
Abrade the finish/floor in between coats, but do not buff the final coat! Usually you'll need about 3-4 coats to fully protect the floor, one or two seals, and two finish coats. Make sure to keep a wet edge while applying with a t-bar.
Depending on many factors, like your lifestyle and type of finish, polyurethane can last between three to six years. However, if you see damage on your floors, it may be time to reapply a fresh finish to your hardwood.
How do you make wood shine like glass?
The best option is to use a varnish or lacquer to give the wood a high gloss finish. While varnish can be sprayed or brushed on, lacquer is best applied by simple spraying. Spraying makes the surface seem finer than painting as it doesn't leave any strokes behind.
Is Polyurethane Waterproof? This finish protects your floors, but polyurethane is not waterproof. It will make your floors water-resistant, though — the coating repels water and helps prevent water absorption.
Respected finishing expert Bob Flexner suggests that sanding between coats isn't necessary for proper adhesion between coats. He (and pretty much everyone else) recommends doing it anyway, mostly in order to get rid of the dust nibs.
Polyurethane, Shellac, Varnish and Lacquer – Use a cotton swab with acetone on it and apply to the wood. If it becomes tacky, than it is shellac or varnish and if it beads, it has a polyurethane finish. If it is lacquer, the lacquer will dissolve completely.
But the Varathane brand actually has the fastest dry times of other oil-based polyurethane brands and it's also self-leveling, so it minimizes brush strokes, which is really nice. Water-based finishes dry faster, are low odor, and clean up is easy with soap and water.
However, marine varnish is a very different story, and it truly is the better choice. One of the biggest benefits of using marine finish is the fact that it can last for a long time and continue to keep the doors looking fantastic. In some cases, people will apply it directly onto the wood.
One alternative to polyurethane sealants is silicone sealants. These sealants are made from silicone, a synthetic rubber. Silicone sealants provide a flexible bond that can withstand extreme temperatures and weathering. They also have good resistance to chemicals and UV light.

Just as your skin will tan or darken when you spend a long time outside, wood changes in color due to sun or artificial UV light exposure. Besides the initial color change, UV light can also cause the wood's finish to change with regular exposure.
Types of Wood Finishes That Don't Yellow
Unlike oil-based polyurethane, water-based polyurethane, shellac, wax, and epoxy resin all remain the same color over time. Each has pros and cons, which I'll discuss below. Water-based polyurethane is durable, protective and dries completely clear.

Traditionally, tung oil has been used on oak to maintain its colour, however, if you wish to darken the oak then hard wax oil is preferable. Danish oil is popular, historically, as a finish on oak as it brings out its rich tones, as well as preventing staining to the surface.
Here's how to age wood and make it look old and gray. Iron vinegar on fresh cedar lumber: Soak some steel wool in white vinegar for a few hours or a few days - the longer it steeps, the darker the aged effect will be.
The oil is generally a mixture of linseed oil, varnish, mineral spirits and sometimes tung oil. We recommend using tung oil for walnut. This type of oil will darken the grain, enhancing and protecting the wood.
The water in water based polyurethane tends to “react with the grain” more, so you often need to apply more coats to achieve a smooth, finish.
Cons of Oil-Based Polyurethane
Longer dry times. Dents easier due to it softer finish. The odor is unbearable (respirator use is recommended). The floor darkens over time.
Polyurethane yellowing over light wood
With a light-colored wood floor, yellowing will be very obvious. Solution: Unfortunately, there is no easy solution here. You can get a high-quality polyurethane that will take longer to yellow, but it will eventually start to turn.
When protecting and finishing your oak floor, we always recommend the use of a hard wax oil, such as the Fiddes Hard Wax Oil. These traditional hardwax oils can leave your floor with a warm, honey colour which is often beloved by many.
Moisture-cured urethane is considered one of the hardest finishes available, but also has one of the highest VOC's.

How do you permanently waterproof wood?
Liquid sealants are one of the most common ways to waterproof wood. These sealants are applied directly to the surface of the wood and form an impermeable barrier against water penetration. It is important to apply several coats of sealant to ensure a thorough application.
Sealers Vs Primers
The best rule to adhere to is to apply at least two coats of sealer directly onto the raw wood. This will protect the wood and create a barrier. Then apply primer to enhance adhesion, return tooth to the surface, and whiten the surface for optimising paint colours you plan to apply over it.
Water Seal can only be used on bare and uncoated brick, stone or concrete. How long will Water Seal last? If applied correctly, Water Seal will last up to 4 years. This is dependent on conditions such as orientation of the wall and local climate.
The easiest option is to apply a clear, water-based finish such as Minwax's Polycrylic. Two brushed coats are enough for the table's base, but apply three to the top for added protection. For more of an in-the-wood look, brush or wipe on a coat of blond shellac, such as Zinsser's pre-mixed SealCoat.
As a first step to removing layers of grime from old wood furniture, use an oil soap (Murphy Oil Soap Wood Cleaner, $4, Target) and water. Rinse and dry well. If the finish still seems dirty, clean lightly with #0000 steel wool dipped in a cleaning product.
Your goal with your wood project decides whether you want to use wax or linseed oil. Wax only stops the wood from graying. Linseed oil adds to the wood's beauty. Wax doesn't penetrate the wood, but linseed oil does, offering enhanced wood protection.
Polyurethane for hardwood floors is the finishing coat of your flooring. It is essentially liquid plastic. It coats your floors to keep them safe from scratches, water, and other damage.
As a general rule, polyurethane can take as long as 30 days to completely and correctly cure. It would be best to give yourself a full 3- days before using your wood floors following a polyurethane treatment for the best possible outcomes.
Therefore, it is recommended that you stay out of your home for at least 72 hours after applying an oil-based polyurethane finish. It's also recommended to have proper ventilation in the room during the drying process. In order to fully cure, this finish typically requires at least 30 days.
Polyurethane Flooring Cons
One of the main drawbacks of polyurethane floor coatings is their high sensitivity to moisture. Exposure to moisture and wetness can create bubbles and blemishes on the surface, which is why polyurethane floor coatings won't wear well in spaces with high humidity or exposure to moisture.
How many coats of polyurethane should be put on hardwood floors?
We recommend a minimum of 3 coats of water based polyurethane as it coats in thinner, but harder layers, than an oil based poly. Water based polyurethane dries very quickly and up to 4 coats can be applied in one day. Jobs 1,500 – 5,000 sq ft, 2-4 days for completion.
You can perform a spot test on a small taped-off area of the floor. Rub the area with a sand screen, and apply a coat of polyurethane. Check your floor after 24 hours—if the hardwood has no residue, you can continue to refinish without sanding.
Water-based Polyurethane Finishes
Most water-based finishes dry clear and do not change color over time. The “yellowing” of the floor's color often seen with oil-based polyurethanes won't happen with water-based.
There's no right or wrong answer about which polyurethane floor finish is a better option for your home. Oil-based used to last longer, but manufacturers are now developing high-quality water-based hardwood floor sealers that provide the same durability level.
It is also okay to do just 2 coats for very low traffic areas. Sometimes people will do this for their 2nd floor as there is less traffic there as well as less grit from shoes (especially if you don't wear your shoes upstairs). I also have some customers that just don't have the budget for 3 coats of poly.
Water-based polyurethane requires at least two hours of dry time between coats, and you should only apply two coats in a day.
Many manufacturers recommend applying polyurethane to floors with lambswool applicators because it offers a smooth finish. Synthetic lambswool works with water-based poly but not with oil-based poly. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the best applicator pad options to use with your chosen poly finish.
Urethane wood flooring
The polyurethane finish dries much faster than oiled finishes, so you can expect to be walking on your new living space in only 4-6 hours after it has been applied.
DON'T: Go too high in grit or it can cause you to over sand your floors leaving them unable to absorb stain or poly adequately. DO: clean your floors with mineral spirits before adding your finish to the floors. Also make sure to vacuum a good amount of times prior and wipe baseboards, trim, counters, etc down.
