Does Ad Astra have a twist?
The ending to Ad Astra posits that we've been looking in the wrong direction. Maybe it's inherently irresponsible for us to search the stars for something to save us or to give us meaning, ignoring what's actually happening to humanity in the meantime.
At the end of Ad Astra, Roy is rescued from his spacecraft back on Earth. A group of men runs toward him. At first, they look like aliens, but when they come into focus, they are unmistakably human. Roy seems to have this realization at the same moment we do and smiles as he is greeted, tears in his eyes.
Clifford, dead-set on proving intelligent, non-human life was out there and, as it is implied, driven to the fringes of sanity by the possibility no such life exists, reveals he locked all other Lima Project team members in one corridor of their space station and opened the airlock, effectively killing them.
Ad Astra's conflict originally looks to be about Roy finding his father and stopping a horrific event from happening. But the real struggle is Roy learning the truth about Clifford's legacy, humanity's journey to space, and ultimately his decision to reconnect with humanity itself as a result.
Our hero is invited to a top-secret meeting where it is revealed that his father may still be alive and somehow responsible for said surges, which are due to “cosmic ray bursts” via “antimatter”.

Captain Lawrence Tanner - Died of his wounds after being mauled by the baboons. Helen Lantos' Parents - Died when Clifford disabled their life support. 13 Unnamed Lima Station Crew Members - Killed by Clifford who disabled their life support for attempted mutiny.
: thus one goes to the stars : such is the way to immortality.
