Can I use Vaseline as mold release?
Petroleum jelly is a suitable mold release agent best suited for simple molds without fine details. The jelly thins when applied by hand, coating the mold material. If used on highly detailed molds, the petroleum jelly may be as thick as some of the fine details, resulting in lost details on your finished resin object.
Are There Alternative Mold Release Agents? You can use common materials like vegetable oil, mineral oil, cooking spray or petroleum jelly. This is a much cheaper way than commercial mold release agents.
Firstly you need to understand that silicone does not stick to anything other than the adhesive system or the PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive). This means silicone does not interface directly with wood or metal or any other material, instead it interfaces with the PSA itself.
The two most popular mold releases used are: Partall Paste #2 (wax) and Partall #10 (PVA). When both are used together, it forms a great release system. Partall paste #2 (or other brand wax) can be used on the mold. Rub it on evenly.
Vaseline will work well too. It can be a bit greasy, so keep the layer light. Two coasters of mine got stuck to each other,i just put a drop of coconut oil and that helped me in seperating the two.
It may tear or crumble if you don't use a mold release. On a side note, once you use candy molds for resin, please don't use them for food again.
Any cooking oil or cooking spray will work as a mold release, such as pam cooking spray, olive oil canola oil, vegetable oil etc.. Avoid using too much mold release as it will create defects in the mold (wipe up any pooling or access).
Generally, silicone RTV mold making rubber does not stick to anything, and nothing will stick to it. The exception is that it will stick to itself, other silicones, silica, and glass.
- Pour 1/2 cup of mineral oil into a spray bottle.
- Add 6 drops of bleach to the spray bottle and replace the lid. The bleach will prevent mildew from forming on your mold and ruining it.
- Shake the spray bottle each time before spraying the release agent onto your mold. you may like.
For amateur builders, automotive paste wax made with carnauba wax can often be substituted for mold release wax. Meguiar's Mirror Glaze Automotive Paste Wax is one brand that has worked well for us. Avoid liquid car waxes, as they are not as effective and can cause release problems.
How do you keep fiberglass from sticking to your skin?
In addition to a long sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves, dust mask and eye goggles rub your hands and arms with baby powder or corn starch before working with fiberglass insulation. The powder keeps much of the fiberglass from sticking to your skin causing it to itch.
