Copper investing: How to invest

The World Bank estimated in its commodity forecast report that the spot price for copper will average $8,500 per metric ton by the end of 2021. The price is expected to decrease to $7,500 in 2022 and then grow to $8,250 by 2035.

Copper had a nice ride in 2021. After a stomach-churning 2020, the red metal went on to rebound sharply in 2021, hitting an all-time high of $10,512 per metric ton on May 9, 2021 – an increase of 130% compared to March 2020's pandemic lows.
What will copper be worth in 2030?
The global copper powder market was projected to be worth some 941.5 million U.S. dollars in 2030, a slow increase with a compound annual growth rate of around 4.2 percent.
Last week, analysts at CIBC announced that they adjusted their end-of-year copper price forecast to $5.25 a pound, Kitco reports. The estimates are now 22% and 32% above 2021 and 2022 consensus estimates.
Copper prices have risen 125% from their March 2020 lows, and the red metal has been among the commodities hitting record high prices since the pandemic began. Several factors have contributed to copper's rally, including: Slow growth in copper mining supply. Higher prices for crude oil and natural gas.

By Q4 2022, Goldman Sachs predicts copper prices to reach $12,250 per tonne. Meanwhile, Bank of America predicts copper prices to average $9,813 per tonne through 2022. Beyond a 2-3 year window, experts believe demand for copper will stay strong in the long term.
Slower copper production in recent years has led to a shortage with demand rising. Copper prices followed China's pace of growth, which rebounded in the second half of 2020 and the first half of 2021.
The refined copper market saw a deficit of 479,000 mt in 2020, according to the International Copper Study Group, or ICSG. ICSG expects a small deficit of 42,000 mt in 2021, with 2022 supply forecast to exceed demand by a colossal 328,000 mt.
The Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco) on Thursday raised its projection for 2022 copper prices to $4.40 per pound, amid a perceived scarcity due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In January, Cochilco maintained its projected price for copper at $3.95 per pound.
Copper prices have reached an all time high. On Monday the London Market Exchange and Comex listed copper at $4.90 per pound.
Why is copper so expensive right now?
The price of copper is largely influenced by the health of the global economy. This is due to its widespread applications in all sectors of the economy, such as power generation and transmission, construction, factory equipment and electronics.

Will copper become the new gold?
Copper could become a "new gold" in the world in years to come, because of its role in the low-carbon economy, according to recent statements, made by Alisher Usmanov, one of Russia's richest businessman.
Are We Going to Run Out of Copper? It Is Highly Improbable! Since 1960, there has always been, on average, 38 years of reserves, and significantly greater amounts of known resources (USGS data). In addition, recycling, innovation and mining exploration continue to contribute to the long-term availability of copper.
Copper Reserves and Resources
Copper is naturally present in the Earth's crust. Global copper reserves are estimated at 870 million tonnes (United States Geological Survey [USGS], 2020), and annual copper demand is 28 million tonnes.
Assuming the recent trend in intensity of use is maintained during our forecast period, nickel will see the fastest growth, with demand growing by 123 per cent from 2020 to 2035. Aluminium and steel will also see significant growth of 57 per cent and 50 per cent respectively, with copper increasing by 26 per cent.

Copper will never rust for the same reason as bronze — it contains too little iron. Though it will not rust, copper can form a green film, or patina, on its surface over time. However, this patina will not flake the way rust does. Instead, it creates an even, thick coating on top of the copper itself.
These premiums are due to a number of variables, such as the coin's rarity or the costs associated with mining, processing and stamping the coin and then bringing it to market. For gold and silver, these premiums are typically not much higher than the base metal price (for common bullion coins that is).
