Hint: It's Not Carat
Hint: It's Not Carat
Diamond cut is the single most important of the 4Cs when it comes to the physical beauty of a diamond. Why? Because a diamond’s cut determines how much it sparkles.
The number of facets, the angle of the facets, and the symmetry and alignment of the shape will affect how the diamond returns light. And the goal of diamond cut should always be optimal light return. However, because diamond crystals are among the most valuable items on the planet, most diamonds cut in the industry today are still cut for weight retention at the expense of beauty. We cut each and every one of our diamonds for optimal light return at Hearts On Fire.
And as a result, Hearts On Fire diamonds always receive an Ideal rating from the American Gem Society (AGS). An Ideal rating from the AGS is rare—in fact, only about 3-5% of the world’s cut diamonds are cut to ideal proportions. Hearts On Fire diamonds are the truly the best-of-the-best.
Achieving an Ideal cut involves both art and science, and neither should be sacrificed. For example, some diamond cutters tailor the cut so the carat weight stays above 1.0 carats. But this isn’t always a good thing. For each individual diamond, there are specific proportions that will make the diamond sparkle at its best, and it is far better to have an Ideal-cut diamond that is 0.90 carats than a poorly cut diamond that is 1.00 or 1.10 carats. A good cut will result in a better sparkle. That’s why cut is the most important of the 4Cs—if a diamond is poorly cut, no clarity grating, color grading, or carat weight will make up for it. The diamond will look dull and glassy. When a diamond is cut to the proper proportions and symmetry, it will return light out of its top. If a diamond cut is too deep, the light will leak out the side, and if a diamond cut is too shallow, the light will escape out the bottom. Ultimately, the precision of the cut affects the value of a diamond by 50% or more. Next to carat weight in a larger diamond, it is the most important value factor for a diamond.
When you look at a diamond, all you’re really seeing is its sparkle. And that’s a result of expert craftsmanship.
WHAT ARE THE 4CS?
WHAT ARE THE 4CS?
The 4Cs are cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Together they
contribute to the overall beauty and value of a diamond.
The 4Cs are cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Together theycontribute to the overall beauty and value of a diamond.
At Hearts On Fire, we pay close attention to each of the 4Cs, ensuring bright, beautiful, sparkling diamonds every single time. Of the 4Cs, cut- its proportion and symmetry- is the most important factor in determining a diamond's beauty, value, and light performance.
Diamond Carat
DIAMOND CARAT
Diamond carat is the measurement of the diamond’s weight—not its size. Though diamond carat weight is the factor which most affects the price of a larger diamond, cut is the factor that determines how much sparkle and outward beauty it will have.
It’s important to keep in mind that carat refers only to a diamond’s weight, and not necessarily to its size. Even if two diamonds have the same carat weight, the cut of the diamond will affect how large the diamond appears, and how much sparkle it emits. That’s why Hearts On Fire diamonds are cut for beauty and consistency, and never for size alone.
Diamond Clarity
DIAMOND CLARITY
Hearts On Fire sources optically pure rough diamond crystals with exemplary clarity.
At Hearts On Fire, octahedral or double pyramid diamond crystals are our preferred rough source. These rough diamond crystals are internally pure, meaning they are clear or nearly clear when they emerge from the ground. Octahedral rough diamond crystals are rare, and form only in high temperature and pressure conditions, so they are more difficult to source than diamonds with more visible inclusions, like crystals and debris that got trapped during formation.
You never have to worry about seeing any major inclusions in Hearts On Fire diamonds—our diamonds consistently get American Gem Society (AGS) clarity ratings ranging from Flawless (absolutely no inclusions) to Slightly Included (slight characteristics that can only be seen under 10X magnification, and are generally not visible to the naked eye). See our Diamond Clarity Chart for more information.
Diamond Color
DIAMOND COLOR
Hearts On Fire sources only colorless and near-colorless rough diamond crystals, ensuring a clean, brilliant sparkle every single time.
When we talk about diamond color, what we’re really talking about is lack of color. The less body color, the rarer and more valuable the diamond.
At heartsonfire.com, we only sell white diamonds, with American Gem Society (AGS) color grades ranging from D (Colorless) to J (Near Colorless). Select K quality diamonds (Faint Yellow) are sold in our retail stores based on availability.Diamond Cut
DIAMOND CUT
Diamond cut is the single most important of the 4Cs when it comes to beauty and sparkle. With our Hearts On Fire proprietary cut, we consistently produce diamonds that sparkle better and brighter than any other diamonds on earth.
Hearts On Fire diamonds are cut with impeccable attention to detail every time, returning as much light as possible for a bright, unmistakably brilliant sparkle. All Hearts On Fire diamonds get Ideal ratings by the American Gem Society (AGS). Ideal ratings are rare—in fact, only 3-5% of the world’s diamonds get Ideal ratings from the AGS.
We spent years refining an in-house formula for our cut, one that returns 98% of light and precisely balances proportion, symmetry, and polish. This balance amplifies the light reflected by our diamonds, giving them a radiant, rainbow-like sparkle that catches the eye from across the room.
Poorly cut diamonds look smaller than they really are, hiding their beauty in extra weight around the bottom or sides. This gives these diamonds larger carat weights, but less sparkle.
At Hearts On Fire, we know better. Our craftsmen always cut each diamond for individual beauty and optimal light return, and never carat weight alone. This is rare in our industry, but we understand that there’s so much more to a diamond than its carat weight.
