Do not attempt to outrun a tornado in your car. AccuWeather suggests that if you are far enough away from a tornado, drive in a 90-degree angle away from the twister.
If the tornado is close, abandon your car and seek shelter in a sturdy structure. If there are no buildings close by, find a low spot or ditch away from your car. AccuWeather says to avoid going into mobile homes, which are more dangerous than being in your car.
If you are stuck in your car, fasten your seatbelt and cover your head below your windshield and windows to avoid shattering glass.
AccuWeather says that you should not seek shelter under an underpass during a tornado. Winds from a tornado can accelerate through small spaces, making underpasses potentially dangerous.
Cars, buses, and trucks are easily tossed by tornado winds. If you're unable to make it to a safe shelter, either get down in your vehicle and cover your head and neck or leave your vehicle and seek shelter in a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine.
The best course of action if you spot a tornado while driving is to pull over and seek shelter. If there are sturdy buildings around, enter one and go to its lowest level without windows.
If a Tornado Warning is issued for your area, seek shelter immediately. If you have a tornado shelter or basem*nt, seek shelter there. If that is unavailable, go to the lowest floor of your home and shelter in an interior room away from windows, such as a closet or a bathroom.
The safest place in the home is the interior part of a basem*nt. If there is no basem*nt, go to an inside room, without windows, on the lowest floor. This could be a center hallway, bathroom, or closet. For added protection, get under something sturdy such as a heavy table or workbench.
If you were picked up by a tornado, then the chances of survival are sadly slim. There are a handful of ways to not survive being picked up by the tornado. For one thing, if it lifts you high and lets you go, then the fall will likely kill you. Secondly, tornados pick up a lot of other things, not just humans.
