Hair follicle drug tests identify drugs or drug metabolites in a sample of hair. A drug metabolite is a substance that is generated in the body as a drug is being broken down and eliminated. Once a drug is consumed, it enters the bloodstream and travels throughout the body.

In general, the detection time is longest in hair, followed by urine and oral fluid. Drugs in hair may be detectable for approximately 90 days, whereas drugs in urine are generally detectable for one to seven days or longer in chronic users and in oral fluid from five to 48 hours.

Hair follicle testing can detect drug use within the last three months. Every individual is different, so hair follicle testing is not 100 percent accurate.
