Foreign exchange risk, also known as currency risk, is the potential loss or gain from fluctuations in exchange rates between different currencies. It affects businesses that operate internationally, trade across borders, or invest in foreign assets. To manage this risk effectively, you need to apply some data analysis techniques that can help you measure, monitor, and hedge your exposure. Here are some of the most important ones.

1 Historical simulation
Historical simulation is a method of estimating the value at risk (VaR) of a portfolio based on the historical movements of the exchange rates. It involves simulating the changes in the portfolio value over a certain period of time, using the actual exchange rate data from that period. This way, you can capture the non-linear and non-normal characteristics of the exchange rate distribution, and assess the probability and magnitude of potential losses.

there are more than one technique can be used to overcome FX risk. However, we must use more than one as they complete each other, for an example I think use of Historical Simulation will be very useful when it be used with Hedging strategies, when we used hedging strategy, it helps us save our portfolio from negative impact of unexpected changes, however sometimes, the changes cannot be absorbed by hedging especially if we have no historical information about the movement of the currencies. so using of the historical information in align with hedging strategies will be very effective to overcome FX risk.

Historical data is one of the core analysis to determine where the price would move within the day based on the historical price pattern so you can not only rely on historical data, you need to look at the fundamental side such as The FED News release, interest rates, etc

2 Scenario analysis
Scenario analysis is a technique of evaluating the impact of different scenarios on the exchange rate exposure of a portfolio. It involves creating hypothetical situations that reflect possible changes in the economic, political, or market conditions that affect the currency markets. For example, you can test how your portfolio would perform under a scenario of a sudden depreciation of your home currency, or a scenario of a global financial crisis. This way, you can identify the sources and drivers of your foreign exchange risk, and plan your contingency strategies accordingly.

The using of scenario analysis technique is a way to predict of currencies in different ways even if it optimistic or pessimistic. However, the prediction will be very effective if it based on enough historical data. So, it required from us to partially using historical simulation as it will give us an acceptable view about historical and actual data of currencies movement.

The use of scenario analysis is to predict if not this than that happens, so that you can have plan a and plan b depending where the price moved within the day, at the least expected to be within the price range of the scenario, in other words like you have the worst case scenario over the best case scenario

3 Sensitivity analysis
Sensitivity analysis is a technique of measuring how sensitive the value of a portfolio is to changes in one or more exchange rate factors. It involves calculating the partial derivatives of the portfolio value with respect to each factor, such as the spot rate, the forward rate, the interest rate differential, or the volatility. This way, you can quantify how much your portfolio value would change for a given change in each factor, and determine which factors are most influential and risky.

sensitivity analysis can be usefull to use if you are looking to enter the market or exit the market within the opening nor the closing of the market sessions considering it's volatility might get wider than the normal trading sessions also it will delay the closing positions so that it will closed at the price we'd want it to be which relates to the spot rate which will slide significantly due to its volatility and the price movements so yes sensitivity analysis should take place before you enter, while your positions are open and before you closes your positions

4 Hedging strategies
Hedging strategies are techniques of reducing or eliminating the foreign exchange risk of a portfolio by using financial instruments, such as futures, options, swaps, or forward contracts. They involve taking a position in the opposite direction of the exposure, so that the gains or losses from one position offset the losses or gains from the other. For example, you can hedge your exposure to a foreign currency by buying or selling a futures contract on that currency, or by entering into a swap agreement with another party. This way, you can lock in a fixed exchange rate for a certain amount and period of time, and avoid the uncertainty and volatility of the market.

5 Data visualization
Data visualization is a technique of presenting and communicating the data analysis results in a graphical or interactive form. It involves using charts, graphs, maps, dashboards, or other visual tools to display the key information and insights about the foreign exchange risk of a portfolio. For example, you can use a heat map to show the VaR of different currency pairs, or a scatter plot to show the correlation between the exchange rates and other variables. This way, you can enhance your understanding and interpretation of the data, and facilitate your decision making and reporting processes.

as per proved before that data visualization technique is one of the most valuable ways to deliver the information to related parties. However, the way to use this technique must be understandable for each related party and under unified template and definitions to guarantee that all parties have been benefited from this technique
