Is there a water temperature difference on the different sides of the island because of currents or anything?

As far as I know most of the places to swim are basically on the same side of the island (where Eagle and Palm Beach are located) as the other side has much rougher water.

I have noticed that the water in Aruba is probably the coolest I have experienced in the Caribbean, which surprised me as it's on of the most southern islands. The water is not cold but noticeably cooler than other islands have I have visited even during the same time of year. I have been to Aruba in August and March in the last few years and the water was comfortable once I got in but took some getting used to. I have been to some islands in August before and the water was like a bath but that was not the case in Aruba. Don't get me wrong, it was beautiful and refreshing but just not as warm as I expected.

I was curious about this so I did some reading about it and found out there is a reason for this. The currents in the Caribbean head south and then when they hit the South American coast there is a upwelling of deeper cold water that flows back north and causes Aruba to experience cooler water temps.

Genio - I'm curious if you found any list of which islands have the warmest water temps. I went to St Martin last year and the water was very warm (like stepping into bathwater, which i like, haha). I just came back from Grand Cayman which had water similar to how you describe Aruba (i.e. it seemed cold at first but after 15 min felt fine). My first trip to Aruba is at the end of this month, so I'll be prepared for the first time going into the ocean, thanks!

The coolest water I experienced was on Turks and Caicos and Cuba (twice at the end of November). Been almost everywhere in Caribbean and Aruban waters are the most comfortable and warm anytime.

I have been in May/June, October and December/January. I have only noticed a real difference in December/January. We went swimming on the windward side of the island at Andicurrari Beach, near the Natural Bridge and it was actually quite warm.

As cammiedog said, the ocean in Aruba is cooler in winter vs. summer. January average is 79 F. and August to November the temperature averages 83 F. You won't see the water getting much warmer due to upwelling of currents hitting the South American continent.

I have been to Aruba during every season and never experienced cold water! You know how you go to a restaurant or party and one of your friends is freezing balls while everyone else is comfortable! It's all relative. My mom was cold and looking for a sweater in Scottsdale during August! :)

I've been in Aruba every season also since my first trip 30 years ago this coming July. The only months I've missed were February, June and August. I always felt the water was the warmest for me was September. Other months I didn't feel the water temperature was cold but felt it was a little too cool for my liking.
