Watch Spotting: Steph Curry Wears A Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller To The White House To Celebrate The 2022 NBA Title (2024)

Yesterday, the reigning NBA champion Golden State Warriors paid a visit to the White House in Washington D.C. to meet with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Warriors superstar Steph Curry arrived in a crisp blue suit and a hardcore stainless steel sports watch on a steel bracelet: The Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller.

His appearance at the White House occurred less than 24 hours after he torched my beloved Washington Wizards for 41 points en route to a 127-118 victory (woe is me). Now, I've written a good deal about the intersection of basketball and horology here on Hodinkee. And we've had our fair share of players appear on Talking Watches from three-point marksman (and podcaster extraordinaire) JJ Redick to Curry's own teammate Andre Iguodala.

When it comes to players and their watch choices, I've often noticed that tastes seem to veer toward precious metals or the very high-end. Unless we're talking about Klay Thompson and his extensive Tissot collection (he's a proud brand ambassador), we rarely see what some would consider to be a "pedestrian" steel tool watch. And yes, by NBA standards, a Rolex Deepsea is somewhat pedestrian.

But, let's be honest, it fits. Of all NBA players, Curry actually has a need for a watch like this. Surely, with its 3,900-meter water resistance, the Deepsea can withstand his deep…DEEP three-point range.

The Deepsea is one of the oldest modern Rolex divers dating all the way back to 2008 (when Curry was still launching triples at Davidson College) and one that was updated this year at Watches & Wonders. At 44mm it used to represent the largest Rolex you could buy – until last November. That's when the Crown saw fit to one-up itself by unleashing the titanium (RLX) Deepsea Challenge with a 50mm diameter and a positively insane 11,000m water resistance rating. I'm honestly a little bummed that Curry didn't wear that watch.

He has history with his Deepsea though. We've seen him wearing it as far back as 2015 when he won his first NBA Most Valuable Player award. So clearly it's a meaningful piece for him, and we love that.

Curry is a known watch lover and watch gifter. In 2021, after breaking the all-time three-point record he gave engraved Rolex watches to his teammates Draymond Green, and Iguodala. I can only assume Thompson respectfully declined the offer. Only Tissot for that man.

While wearing his 44mm Deepsea yesterday, Curry and the rest of the Warriors squad presented special commemorative jerseys to both Biden and Harris. And prior to that, he and head coach Steve Kerr paid a visit to the White House Briefing Room where they took part in a special briefing. The watch got a proper tour of the presidential residence.

Currently, the Warriors are off to a less-than-stellar start as we pass the mid-season mark, but I'll never count them out, and we'll certainly keep our eyes on Curry's wrist for the rest of the season.
