Standard washer and dryer sizes are generally 27 inches wide, 39 inches tall and 32 to 34 inches deep for front load units. Whereas, top load washers and dryers are typically 27 inches wide, 42 to 44 inches tall and less deep with depths of 27 to 28 inches.
While measuring, make sure to allow for at least six inches of space between the back wall and the appliance for hoses and ventilation, as well as one inch of clearance between the washer and dryer for side-by-side units.
Standard side-by-side washer and dryer dimensions
For standard side-by-side washers and dryers, you'll need a space of about 56 inches wide for the set. If you have front load units, make sure to allow about four feet of space in front of the appliance for ample room to load and unload your laundry.
For top load units, be mindful to account for at least two feet of clearance on top of the appliance for easy opening and closing of the lid.
Adding washer dryer pedestals to front load washers and dryers from Whirlpool may increase height by about 15 inches, allowing you to load and unload with minimal bending.
Standard washers typically have around three to five cu. ft. of capacity, while dryers generally have five to seven cu. ft.

Compact washer and dryer dimensions
Compact washers and dryers are designed to fit inside apartments, small homes and closets. This provides you the flexibility to either stack the appliances, align them side by side or even install them underneath your counters for more space-saving possibilities.

Standard compact washers and dryers range from24 inches wide, 33 to 36 inches tall and 24 to 26 inches deep.
For stacking, the height will extend. Make sure to account for an area that is approximately24 inches wide, 66 to 72 inches tall and 24 to 26 inches deep.
For aligning compact washers and dryers side by side, you will need a space that is roughly48 inches wide, 34 inches tall and 25 inches deep. Be mindful to leave one inch of space between the appliances.
Whether you are stacking or aligning side by side, remember to allow for at least six inches of clearance in the back for hoses and ventilation.
A ventless dryer may allow for even more space-saving capabilities with a shallower installation depth than vented standard-sized dryers. These appliances typically have around one to three cu. ft. of storage, about half the size of a standard dryer.

An all-in-one washer and dryer is another compact option that can both wash and dry your laundry in one appliance, allowing you to save space without sacrificing laundering capabilities.

Large capacity washer and dryer dimensions
Large capacity washers typically have more than five cu. ft. of capacity, enough to wash a king size comforter and sheets in one load.
A large capacity dryer generally has a capacity between seven to nine cu. ft., enough to handle 15 to 20 towels in one drying cycle.

How to measure for a new washer and dryer
Along with measuring the dimensions of your washer and dryer, make sure to determine the height, width and depth of the laundry area to ensure a proper fit.
Be mindful to account for six inches of space between the back wall and one inch of space between the appliances for side-by-side placement.

Step 1: Measure for washer and dryer width
Using your measuring tape, measure the width of your washer and dryer—from left to right.
For flexibility, add one inch to your width measurement for buffer space between each side wall. To help minimize noise when your appliances are set in place, account for a one-inch gap between the appliances.
Step 2: Measure for washer and dryer height
Next, measure the height of your washer and dryer—from top to bottom.To be safe, add an extra two feet to ensure easy loading and unloading of top load units.
Step 3: Measure for washer and dryer depth
Lastly, measure the depth of your washer and dryer—from front to back. Be mindful to add about six inches to your depth measurements to account for hoses and venting in the back of the appliance.
For front load, add approximately four feet to allow for extra space to load and unload laundry.
If you are placing the appliances inside of a closet, make sure that the closet doors are able to fully open and close without obstruction.
Step 4: Map out and measure a path for washer and dryer delivery
After you have taken your measurements, determine the best path of entry to your desired installation location. Beginning at the entrance to your home, measure the width of doorways and hallways to make sure the washer and dryer can be maneuvered into place.
