LiquidPiston is the developer and manufacturer of a pistonless rotary engine called the X-engine, located in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

LiquidPiston's engines are in development and are not currently available for purchase. However, LiquidPiston has test kits available for development / manufacturing partners, and is seeking commercialization partnerships.

Flat-top pistons have the smallest amount of surface space; this enables them to create the most force. This type of piston is ideal for creating efficient combustion.

The electric engine is most efficient. Electric motors are very efficient at converting electricity into work. Physicists throw around abstract numbers like 90%, whereas when discussing combustion engines, they use numbers less than 40%.

Unlike Piston engines, Rotaries are almost immune to catastrophic failure. In a piston motor, you can have a piston seize and cause all kinds of damage, but in a Rotary motor, while the engine will lose power, it will continue to produce a limited amount of power until it finally dies.

LiquidPiston's X Mini is powered by the company's patented High-Efficiency Hybrid Cycle (HEHC), an improved thermodynamic cycle optimized for fuel efficiency and provides low-noise benefits. The system has been demonstrated operating at 3.5 horsepower (net indicated) / 2.1 horsepower (brake) at 10,000 RPM.

How long has LiquidPiston been in business? ›

LiquidPiston offers engines with an innovative thermodynamic cycle and increases average efficiency over conventional diesel engines. The company was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in Bloomfield, Connecticut, United States.

Piston pumps typically operate up to 5,000 psi and some are rated well beyond that, with some in the 20,000-30,000 psi range.

Compression Stroke

Now the piston starts it's upwards stroke, compressing the air/fuel mixture to pressures of 100 to 200 psi or more. The actual pressure depends on when the intake valve closes, the pressure in the intake manifold (MAP or Manifold Absolute Pressure), Compression Ratio, and other details.

The short answer is that a bigger bore is generally the best way to get more power. It creates more space, allowing for bigger valve openings, which in turn can bring more fuel and air into the cylinder.

It is a rotary engine that works without a piston. It generates compression, ignition, expansion, and exhaust, just in half a rotation of the crankshaft. It's a half stroke high-speed engine.

Pistons are made from either a low carbon steels or aluminum alloys. The piston is subjected to high heat, inertia, vibration, and friction. Carbon steels minimize the effects of differential thermal expansion between the piston and cylinder walls.

Average engine lifespan

While there is no absolute rule when it comes to how long engines will last, there are a few general figures that can give you a rough idea about what to expect from your car. For some time, the average lifespan of a car's engine was eight years, or 150,000 miles.

Petrol engines have a shorter lifespan due to fuel property, which wears out the engine components quicker. Diesel engines last longer than petrol engines as the wear and tear is less pronounced due to fuel property.

Larger engines will generate more torque. That allows the use of a transmission that lets the engine run slower for the same given car speed. So while a four-cylinder engine might turn at 2,500 rpm at 65 mph, an eight-cylinder engine might turn at 1,800. That could contribute to longer life.
