Walking Safety

Save

My boyfriend and I will be staying at Wacamaya Condos (Rooi Santo, just east of the Fisherman's Huts) for about a week this month. Is it safe to walk from here to the beaches or restaurants around Palm Beach after dark or do we need to always plan on getting a cab? We're the type of people who love to walk, so I'm less concerned about distance and more concerned about safety.

Thanks!!

Aruba is very safe to explore. I have absolutely no concerns about walking around at night. Maybe, San Nicholas. Maybe. It is a bit on the seedy side. In all of my trips to Aruba, I have only been to San Nicholas once, so not real sure about the safety factor. I know that I didn't like it.

Early in the morning, be aware of all the joggers and runners along Palm Beach and on the "boardwalk"...being healthy can be dangerous! Other than that, you will be fine!

In addition to flashlights, you may want to wear some type of "reflectorized" clothing. Traffic has become fairly busy in the area and walking paths down to at least the Ritz or the Marriott are not that great if you follow the road nor are the paths from there on down to the commercial area - we do it (love to walk also) but we do it cautiously. Alternatively, you can cross over to the beach as soon as you can and then just follow that down to about the Holiday Inn area and then go through it onto the commercial area (once you get to the backside of the Ritz or the Marriott you are essentially home free because you eventually will come to a walkway behind the Ocean Club and the Surf Club which will bring you to the Holiday Inn area) - it would be safer to do this. Would not recommend walking alone at night - Aruba, in general, still is fairly safe, but you can never tell.

You are staying in our neighbourhood so I know it well. It is safe to walk at night but as others said make sure you have a couple of flashlights and of course exercise your usual caution. Street lights are not a common thing. The apartment is on a more main road with no sidewalk but there will be a beaten path of sorts you can stick to. Once you get off the "main road" (say about 25 metres) there will be a wide dirt shoulder and then you get to a sidewalk. Depending on how fast you walk of course it shouldn't take you more than 15 minutes to get to the beginning of the hotel area.

Just FYI also Ting Wei grocery store is right across the street. A great little store for all your basic food needs. Enjoy your stay.

Aruba is a great place to walk around at night. I remember stumbling drunk from Mojitos through downtown back to the Surfside Marina. No problems. Please do not wake the Iguanas sleeping in the tree though.
