Viking cruises operates a fleet of 64 river cruise vessels all around the world. Since the launch of ‘Viking Legend’ in 2009, the company has added many new ships and so-called Longships to its fleet. Viking cruises even christened 16 ships in a single day in 2014. Since the beginning of the fleet’s expansion, Drews Marine GmbH has supplied high-quality HVAC for 55 of Viking’s river cruise vessels.

Viking Cruises

Founded in 1997, Viking Cruises offers both river cruises and ocean cruises through two different product lines. The award-winning river cruise division grew to be the world’s largest river cruise line, and offers cruises along the rivers of Europe, Russia, China, Southeast Asia and Egypt.

A comfortable onboard climate

Drews Marine GmbH has supplied the HVAC system, chilled water plant, heating plant and provision cooling plant for 55 vessels. The HVAC system includes mechanical supply or exhaust ventilation for the engine rooms and technical rooms, a chilled water unit and a hot water boiler with oil fired burner and hot domestic water storage tanks. Generator waste heat recovery is applied in order to achieve a higher energy efficiency of the HVAC system.

Design Conditions

The following design conditions were requested for the air conditioning system:

Summer

Outside temperature: Summer 36˚C/70%RH
Inside temperature: Summer 24˚C/<45%RH

Winter

Outside temperature: Winter -10˚C
Inside temperature: Winter 22˚C

Scope of service

Drews Marine GmbH’s scope of service for these vessels includes the design, engineering, construction, assembling, delivery, installation, commissioning, acceptance tests, certificates and documentation.
