Use These Checklists for Easy Eco-Friendly Swaps in Your Home — Old World New (2024)

Creating an eco-friendly home and lifestyle seems overwhelming when you’re bombarded with all of the things you should do to be better at it. No doubt, there are a lot of changes that you can make. Realistically, you can’t make them all in one day, or one week, or one month, or even one year. Change takes time, practice, and patience. I’ve created these eco-friendly home checklists as inspiration and tools to inform, not a standard to live up to. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” That is a quote I live by. I, myself, am not even 50% successful at these lists. However, now I have the knowledge, and I can aspire to create a more eco-friendly home based on this information.

You can use these eco-friendly home checklists in several ways, such as:

  1. Share them on your Instagram stories like an actual checklist. Check off items you have accomplished, and encourage your friends to save the checklist and do the same! Make sure you tag #oldworldnew when you do!
  2. Use it as a goals list. Choose a room that you feel most comfortable making eco-friendly, set a budget and a timeline, whether its a month or two years. Create the eco-friendly home that you need, one item at a time.
  3. Add these items to your shopping list little by little to make a big difference and create a more eco-friendly home.

Eco-Friendly Kitchen

Some of the easiest switches in the kitchen are your cleaning tools. Instead of plastic sponges that leave behind particles, or plastic scrubbers that never really get the job done anyway, switch to plant-based scrubbers. Ecococonut carries coconut husk scrubbers that I love. They actually clean better than any other type of scrubber I’ve used, besides a brillo soap pad. The big difference is that they don’t have toxic soap on them, and they’re gentle. I can use them on baby spoons and cast iron skillets, alike.

Eco-Friendly Bathroom

When making the switch to a more eco-friendly bathroom, it’s easy to start with soaps. Instead of buying liquid soaps, but package free bar soap. This cuts out on plastic waste that is generated from the several bottles you go through when you repeatedly buy liquid soaps. Another majorly beneficial switch is investing in a safety razor. This old school razor will be the last razor you ever need to buy, if you treat it right. Having one razor for life, versus several plastic razors that can’t be recycled, sounds like the perfect way to create an eco-friendly home, right?

Eco-Friendly Nursery

American (United States) tradition makes having a baby very consumeristic. People buy, buy, buy in excess when it comes to a new child. However, children actually need very little compared to the extravagant amount of gifts many popular baby showers show you. The amount and types of items you buy for a baby can help you to create a more tranquil and eco-friendly surrounding for them.

A bedroom is usually a person’s personal haven. You spend 1/3 of your day asleep, so you probably spend a little more than that time in your bedroom. Make that time as green as can be!

Eco Friendly Home Tips

There are several other areas around the home that can use a small change to make a big difference. A lot of these action items require a big investment of time, money, and dedication before you can reap the results. As a result of these investments, you can save money and decrease your ecological footprint at the same time.

So, which room or items will you be tackling on these lists first? My current focus is greening up my hygiene & laundry routines a little more. I’m nowhere near being 100% complete with checking off these lists, nor am I in a rush. I’m going to take my baby steps and live more sustainably every day. I hope you do the same!

xoxo dolls & dudes,

Addie
