A job with the United Parcel Service, the century-old delivery service, is that rarity today offering middle-class pay, health care benefits and a pension — without requiring a college degree. In fact, the more than 350,000 UPS unionized drivers and packers are ready to strike to preserve all that. In negotiating the biggest private-sector agreement in North America this year, the union will demand more pay for part-timers and the elimination of second-tier driving jobs that pay less.
