Back in 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced plans to continue developing stories in the galaxy far far away. It sent shockwaves through the fandom, with many fans excited about the future.

Star Wars: A Force Awakens gave a cinematic feel that has only been matched a few times in cinema history, with it being the first Star Wars film many fans saw on the big screen. Disney’s efforts to close out the trilogy, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, weren’t met with universal praise, however.

Disney went back in time to further expand the galaxy, introducing spin-off films like Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The latter was the first financial failure for the franchise, but over time fans have come to appreciate the film.

Animation is also a place where Disney have sought to fill in the gaps across the timeline with several projects. Star Wars: Rebels showed the burgeoning Rebel Alliance through the eyes of the Spectres, a motley group made up of a Mandalorian, a Twi’lek pilot, a former Jedi, a former warrior, a droid and a street rat. Star Wars: The Clone Wars season seven bringing closure to a war left unfinished, closing out with the Siege of Mandalore.

Star Wars: Resistance showed the rise of the First Order, and Tales of the Jedi explored the lives of Count Dooku and Ahsoka at different points. The most recent series, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, explored the immediate aftermath of Order 66 and the transition from Republic to Empire.

Disney+ has also expanded the live-action stories fans have been told, with The Mandalorian showing Din Djarin and the loveable Grogu going on adventures, The Book of Boba Fett seeing the titular bounty hunter become a crimelord, Obi-Wan Kenobi explaining what happened to the Jedi Master after Order 66 and Andor exploring a darker side to the galaxy (in tone, there are no Sith), it’s fair to say franchise fatigue has started to creep in.

But Disney shows no signs of stopping, and at Star Wars Celebrations 2023, three movies were announced. Dave Filoni will tie together the story started in The Mandalorian but one that’s expanded to include Ahsoka and the upcoming Skeleton Crew, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s post-Rise of Skywalker movie, and James Mangold’s film, which will take audiences right back to the origins of the Jedi itself.

It’s an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan, with a lot to look forward to.

Here is the schedule of upcoming Star Wars shows and movies in 2023 and beyond. The dates may change depending on whether projects are brought forward, delayed, or outright canceled.

Skeleton Crew (2023)

In this story, a group of kids, about 10 years old, from a tiny little planet accidentally get lost in the Star Wars galaxy. It’s the story of their journey trying to find their way home. It will cover adult themes and won’t necessarily be geared toward children. Instead of experiencing the force, these young children will venture out on their own, seeking help from new characters in order to get home.

Vane, a pirate introduced in season three of The Mandalorian, will be returning for the show.

Andor Season 2 (August 2024)

After season one of Andor wowed fans and critics alike with its unconventional take on the Star Wars franchise, excitement is high for the second season.Tony Gilroy mentioned that there is a possibility of including Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO at some point in the series and that season two will also be 12 episodes in length. Season two will see the development of the Rebel Alliance and take Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) into Rogue One

Production on the show will be delayed due to the Hollywood strikes.

The Acolyte (2024)

The Acolyte is a mystery thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 3 (2024)

Star Wars: The Bad Batch season two ended on a shocking cliffhanger and left the Bad Batch changed forever. Thankfully, the twist and turns set up in the final episode will be resolved in a third and final season, set to release sometime in 2024.

Tales of the Jedi Season 2 (2024)

The first season of Tales of the Jedi delighted fans with a detailed look into the early life of Count Dooku and Ahsoka during three stages of hers, with the beautiful animation audiences have come to expect.

During Star Wars Celebrations Europe 2023, Dave Filoni confirmed he will be working on another season, but which Jedi he will focus on is unclear.

Maybe one half on Tarre Vizsla, showing audiences the creator of the darksaber, and the other half on Revan, the legendary character from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game. Another possibility is that Filoni will tackle the Age of Rebellion and Resistance.

Untitled Star Wars Movie (May 22, 2026)

While the title and plot of the film have yet to be revealed, it will likely be one of the three films announced at Star Wars Celebrations, either Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film, James Mangold’s film, or Dave Filoni’s film.

Untitled Star Wars Movie (Dec 18, 2026)

While the title and plot of the film have yet to be revealed, it will likely be one of the three films announced at Star Wars Celebrations, either Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film, James Mangold’s film, or Dave Filoni’s film.

Untitled Star Wars Movie (Dec 17, 2027)

While the title and plot of the film have yet to be revealed, it will likely be one of the three films announced at Star Wars Celebrations, either Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film, James Mangold’s film, or Dave Filoni’s film.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Untitled Star Wars film (TBA)

At Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was confirmed to be the director of a new Star Wars film. Set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, the film will focus on the return of the Jedi Order. Daisy Ridley is set to return as Rey Skywalker, and the film will take place in a new time period called The New Jedi Order.

James Mangold’s Untitled Star Wars film (TBA)

It looks like James Mangold will be continuing his partnership with Lucasfilm after the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He will be making a Star Wars film too, and it will be set 25,000 years before A New Hope. It will explore the origins of the Jedi Order and will be set in a new time period called Dawn of the Jedi.

Dave Filoni’s Untitled Star Wars film (TBA)

From his humble beginnings working on the awful Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated movie, Star Wars veteran Dave Filoni is taking on a live-action film. It will be the culmination of the projects set in The Mandalorian era, telling the story of the New Republic’s war against a resurgent Imperial Remnant.

While no characters have been confirmed yet, it’s safe to assume that the Imperial Remnant will be led by none other than Grand Admiral Thrawn and that Ahsoka, Din, and Grogu will be our light side leads.

The Mandalorian Season 4 (TBA)

Jon Favreau has confirmed that The Mandalorian will return for a fourth season, and he’s already written it, but details of what it will focus on have yet to be revealed. This season will likely feature more of what audiences have come to expect from the series, an expansion of Mandalorian culture and Grogu being cute.

Lando Calrissian Movie (TBA)

Originally a Disney+ show, Lucasfilm confirmed to Variety that the Donald Glover-led series will now be a movie. There is no official premise, but it will star a younger Lando Calrissian, played by Donald Glover. It does carry the possibility of Alden Ehrenreich returning as Han Solo. It also allows the loose ends of Solo to be tied together, with Maul being in charge of the criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn.

Star Wars: A Droid Story (TBA)

Lucasfilm will continue to make new stories that intersect animation and visual effects to explore new opportunities. This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero, guided by the legendary droid duo R2-D2 and C-3PO.

Rogue Squadron (TBA)

Announced in 2020, Rogue Squadron was going to be the next film in the franchise, with Patty Jenkins in the director’s chair. The planned release date was December 2023, but unfortunately, scheduling conflicts and other issues has meant the film has been indefinitely delayed. There is no word on the plot other than it will focus on a group of pilots.

At Star Wars Celebrations Europe 2023, Kathleen Kennedy said that the idea wasn’t completely dead and it might end up as a show on Disney+.

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie (TBA)

The plot is unknown, but Taika Waititi wants to explore new characters in the galaxy. He wants nothing to do with the Skywalkers, and he wants to have fun with an original take on the Star Wars franchise.

At Star Wars Celebrations Europe 2023, Kathleen Kennedy said that the film is still happening, with Waititi writing the project alone.

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy (TBA)

Disney also has announced that the director of The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, will be directing his own Star Wars trilogy. But Johnson’s current commitments to Netflix with the Knives Out franchise means he hasn’t done much, if any, work on it. The director has stated that he’d like to return to Star Wars and would be disappointed if the films didn’t happen.

Talking to Variety, Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that nothing was in active development, but she and Johnson still talk about the idea.

And so, that’s the list of the Upcoming Star Wars Shows and Movies in 2023 and Beyond. We will be sure to keep this updated!
