Currency
According to the regulations of the Egyptian Central Bank travellers are allowed at departure or arrival to carry the maximum amount of:
- 10,000 US dollars (ten thousand) or equivalent amount in other currencies.
- 5,000 Egyptian pounds.
Prohibited Items
As shown in the website of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs the items that travellers are not allowed to carry at their arrival in or departure from Egypt include:
- Medical drugs that cannot be dispensed without a prescription such as Tramadol, Xanax, Librax and other medicines.
- Real and toy arms, ammunition and explosives and any other substances containing explosive materials such as firearms and crackers.
- All kinds of artifacts.
- All kinds of narcotics.
- Subsidized commodities except for personal use.
- Wildlife in all forms (live, embalmed, slaughtered), except with a veterinary quarantine clearance.
- Coral reefs.
- Mango seeds, all fruits saplings, cotton and general seeds, agricultural soil, honey and honey products, all kinds of citrus, all kinds of date palm trees – decorative or productive, at the arrival.
Driving in the Arab Republic of Egypt
Citizens wishing to drive in Egypt should have international driving licenses.
Customs
Depending on the type of items, imported private consignments are subject to customs duties.

First: At arrival:
The following items brought in the country by tourists and transit travellers are exempt from customs duties:
- Used clothes and jewelry and all carried items including cameras, audio and video recorders, theater glasses, musical instruments, mobile phones, disabled chairs and sports equipment provided that they are not meant for trade.
- Valuable items registered in passports or the on the purpose form when travelling.
- New gift items worth at most 1,500 Egyptian pounds each provided that they are not meant for trade.
- Personal medical drugs.
- Personal items purchased from duty free markets within the same customs area.
- Personal luggage, household items, home furniture, private cars of the members of diplomatic missions holding Ph.D. or equivalent degrees at their final return at the end of their scholarships, or, on special conditions, at the return of their families in case of their demise.
- The equipment accompanied by foreign press people after presenting an official undertaking from the press center at the airport to return them at the end of their jobs, or a guarantee acceptable by the customs department.
Second: At departure:
- The above mentioned items that are registered in the passport or for which trust customs duties were paid by tourists and transit travelers at the arrival.
- Valuable items provided that they are registered in the passport or on the special form in case the owners wish to return them to the country again.
