Travel Insurance Has Become Something Many Feel is a Necessary Protection Rather Than Extra Expense (2024)

The travel industry is recovering rapidly, and travel insurance is following suit. Following a sharp drop in 2020 due to the global pandemic, recent research by the US Travel Insurance Association (UStiA) reveals a healthy rebound in consumer spending on travel protection. This rising interest in travel insurance reflects a shift in traveler behavior, motivated by a need for protection and peace of mind in an increasingly uncertain environment.

The Travel Protection Market Sees Recovery and Redefined Value.

The 2020-2022 UStiA Travel Protection Market Study predicted that Americans would spend about $4.27 billion on travel insurance in 2022. Given the rock bottom of $1.72 billion spent in 2020, a significant increase indicated a clear recovery trend.

Online Channels Lead the Charge – Convenience Meets Consumer Needs

The study also identified a shift in how consumers purchase travel insurance. Online distribution channels, including travel insurance providers’ websites and aggregator platforms, are leading the way. These channels accounted for over half of the total consumer spending on travel protection and insured over 80% of travelers in 2022. This trend indicated a growing preference for convenient online options compared to traditional methods like travel agencies. Online platforms offer a more comprehensive range of travel insurance products to compare, allowing for a more personalized approach to securing the right coverage. Additionally, the ease of online transactions and readily available information allows travelers to make informed decisions without geographical limitations.

Travelers Prioritize Trip Cancellation Coverage – Security in Uncertain Times

The study went on to identify the most popular travel insurance benefit – trip cancellation/interruption coverage. Approximately 89% of all travel protection products purchased in 2022 were from the trip cancellation/interruption benefit. Ongoing travel uncertainties, including lingering concerns about the pandemic, potential economic fluctuations, and geopolitical issues, likely fueled this trend. Canceled trips usually become a big waste of money, especially for non-refundable flights and accommodations. Trip cancellation coverage provides much-needed security, allowing travelers to book adventures more confidently, knowing they’ll be reimbursed for covered expenses if their trip gets unexpectedly called off.

Increased Coverage, More People Protected – A Growing Awareness

The number of people covered by travel insurance is also on the rise. In 2022, around 77 million people were protected by travel insurance plans offered by UStiA members. This illustrated a growth of over 17% compared to 2019 and suggested a heightened awareness of the importance of travel protection. More travelers view travel insurance as a valuable investment that safeguards their financial well-being during their journeys instead of just an unnecessary extra expense.

The Road Ahead – Evolving Needs and Continued Growth

The travel insurance market has been growing, and it will be interesting to see how industry insurance products adapt to meet the ever-changing needs of travelers. There are a lot of outside factors that could have a direct impact on the travel insurance market.

For example, the concept of post-pandemic “revenge travel” might influence average trip costs. That alone could potentially affect the travel insurance business in the coming years. Also, travelers wanting more luxurious experiences or longer trips might cause a demand for travel insurance with higher coverage limits. The uptick of new travel trends, like eco-tourism or adventure travel, may also spark a need for specialized coverage options. The US Travel Insurance Association is a key player in consumer education and advocating for high industry standards.

Resources like the UStiA Travel Protection Market Study have provided travelers and industry stakeholders with valuable insights. By understanding current trends and future considerations, travel insurance providers can develop innovative products with comprehensive protection that cater to the diverse needs of today’s globetrotters. A robust travel insurance market creates a more secure and enjoyable travel experience.
