Event: Effective April 1, 2022, most individuals traveling to Brazil who present proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are no longer required to present proof of a COVID-19 test or a Traveler’s Health Declaration (DSV). Unvaccinated travelers who meet one of Brazil’s five exemption categories from vaccination (see below) are now required to submit an RT-PCR test or antigen test performed within one day of departure. Brazil’s five current exemption categories for unvaccinated travelers include the following:
- Brazilian citizens and permanent residents of Brazil;
- Those not eligible for vaccination due to age as defined by the Brazilian Ministry of Health;
- Those with a health condition contraindicating vaccination;
- Those arriving from countries with low vaccination rates as defined by the Brazilian Ministry of Health; and
- Those whose entry is approved for humanitarian reasons by the Office of the President of Brazil.
In its April 1 announcement, the Brazilian government also reopened its waterways to international cruise ships.
While Brazil’s COVID-19 vaccination requirements may change without warning, the CDC recommends that U.S. citizens eligible for vaccination should not travel internationally until they are fully vaccinated. The U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory for Brazil is currently Level 4: Do Not Travel due to COVID-19.
Vaccines must be approved by the Brazil National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), the World Health Organization, the FDA, or by relevant health authorities in the country where the vaccine was administered. To be considered fully vaccinated, the traveler must have received the final dose of the vaccine at least 14 days prior to boarding.
