November was quite a diverse month for me. I read books about work habits, the military, leadership, cooking, and more. I find lately I’ve been doing a good job of mixing reading for fun with reading for progress, and this month was a good example of that. Here are my top books of November 2023.

James Clear – Finished November 18th, 2023

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to improve their life. This was actually my second time through this book, having read it back in 2020, and I think I will continue to read it every couple years. The simple ways that Clear lays out how to both build habits, and break habits is helpful, and inspiring. I took a few action items out of this, and in the subsequent weeks I’ve made progress.

A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload

Cal Newport – Finished November 2nd, 2023

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I must admit, I was a little skeptical of this book having read the title, but I was pleasently surprised. Newport outlines the downsides of emails, and the cost this frictionless communication has. He does a good job of recognizing that email is a mainstay of corporate culture, and with the exception of a few companies he describes, understands that often we can’t completely eliminate email. But he does lay out alternative systems for keeping track of tasks. This was a great read and has impacted how I’ve laid out my task list.

Sheelah Holhatkar – Finished November 6th, 2023

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I’ve been fascinated by Wall Street for a few years now, and I love books that peel back the top layer to outline what going on underneath. This is exactly what this book does, outlining the rise of a hedge fund that engaged in insider trading. It discusses the manipulation of a industry expert in a huge bio-tech study, and how the head of the firm got rich, while insulating himself from any blame. Really engaging story and a great read.

Wondering how I read so much? My biggest recommendation buy a kindle. Having a kindle means I can always have my books with me, and the kindle daily deals mean I can get great books for only a few dollars. It removes barriers to reading and helps me read so much more.
