While overall retail sales of fruits (+4.6%) and vegetables(+3.5%) were up in 2022, these boosts were driven by increases in price rather than volume. According to Circana’s household panel research, the number of households purchasing fresh produce was down across a vast majority of highly popular items like apples, bananas, potatoes, and tomatoes. The highest declines occurred in spinach (-2.8%), squash (-3.5%), mushrooms (-2.9%), and cherries (-7.3%). This research is conducted annually by IFPA's research partner Circana (formerly known as IRI), and reports the purchasing habits of 100,000 U.S. households from across the United States.

While household penetration of most categories was down in 2022, there were some areas of growth. In vegetables, we saw increases in cucumbers (+0.3%) and garlic (+0.7%) over 2021.
