Tips for Selling on Poshmark

Getting Started on Poshmark

Poshmark is a social selling marketplace that works much like Facebook or X (formerly Twitter). Many users sell by using the Android or Apple app on their smartphone. You can also sell on Poshmark via desktop using these tips to selling on Poshmark.

Most users sell gently used clothing and accessories or clothing items that are brand new with tags. Users are called “Poshers” and offer clothing for sale via a virtual “closet.” It only takes a few minutes to list an item for sale on Poshmark.

Secrets to Poshmark Selling

Now that you have created your Poshmark account and possibly listed your first item or two, I want to share a deeper dive into how I am successful with selling on Poshmark. This past year I averaged approximately 20 sales per month, which I was extremely happy with.

I would like to continue this sales trend in 2020. As a busy mom, I don’t have a lot of free time. I like that Poshmark has been successful for me with minimal effort. On average I probably spend 0 to 1 hours per day on Poshmark.

Needless to say Poshmark has kept me pretty busy as a fun side job. By selling clothing items I no longer need or use I am able to use that money to invest in new pieces for my wardrobe.

Before I get into my tips I want to offer a short list of supplies that can be quite helpful in your success with selling on Poshmark. Items that can aid in your Poshmark sales include:

Clear Packing Tape and a Tape gun (to secure your labels and save time!)
Tissue Paper (I prefer white, but will sometimes use colors for packing items)
Sturdy Measuring Tape (metal is great, as fabric can stretch out)
• Natural Light (or a Light Box or Light Ring if you can’t take photos during the day)
Lint Roller (to clean items)

Now, here are my top secrets for Poshmark sales.

1) Take Good Photos: You don’t need to be a professional photographer to sell on Poshmark, but taking clear bright photos of your items is essential. I take most of my photos during the day when the sun is out. I find this provides the best light. I use my smartphone to take all of the photos as one of my tips to selling on Poshmark.

• Bonus Tip: Use square picture mode as photos on Poshmark are always square.

Poshmark will allow you to upload up to 8 photos. Use all eight! Typically I will take a photo of the front of the item, the back, the label, the inner care tag, any distinguishing marks, features or flaws. Then I’ll take close up photos until I use all eight. If any of my photos need improvement I will edit then in Photoshop prior to uploading to Poshmark.

2) Include Measurements: Whether or not you should provide measurements for your items is a hot debate within the Poshmark community. I have been providing measurements from almost the very beginning and it has only proven to be helpful and provide accurate sizing for buyers.

I use a metal measuring tape as fabric can easily stretch over time. I take photos of the measurements when I photograph my items and this makes it easy to reference the measurements later when I write descriptions. If I have room, I will also include the measurement photos in my item listing.

Measurements I typically include, depending on the item:

• Bust Measurement
• Shoulder to Hip
• Sleeve Length
• Pant Inseam
• Pant Rise

3) Make Items Presentable: Along with taking photos in good lighting and measuring items, I try to make items look as presentable as possible prior to photographing them. This includes washing items (unless they are new with tags), lint rolling with a lint roller.

If the item is a little wrinkly I will spray it with a mist of water and shake out the fabric to remove any wrinkles. If there are loose threads on the item trim them. You might also choose to iron your item or iron tags that curl up, so they photograph better.

4) Keep Items Stored and Organized: I highly recommend having a storage plan for items you are selling on Poshmark. Some people like to hang their items in a spare closet, or others fold and place them in totes or bins. Whatever you do make sure you can easily find your items, they aren’t mixed in with your regular wardrobe and they are clean and lint-free as another one of the tips to selling on Poshmark.

This way when an item sells you can quickly find it and ship it to your buyer. I recently started using quart freezer bags to store smaller clothing items. It keeps them free of dust and I don’t have to fold them a second time when they sell.

5) Write a Robust Title and Description: I’m not a professional photographer or a fashion queen. But I am a writer. Writing a robust title and description for each item, I think, has been a huge part of my success on Poshmark. I always start with the brand name, followed by the exact name of the time. Then if I still have room in the title I will include the exact color of the item and the size.

Where do you find this information? Through a lot of research! Some brands (The GAP family of brands being one) will list an item number on the inner tag. If you type the number into Google it will often bring up the exact name of the blouse or pant. Other times I will perform a Google image search for my item and will sometimes find it that way.

7) Fill Out All Fields: After writing the Title and Description for your item, you can select colors, brand, size, category and more. I fill out every field for my item. These are all ways a user can search for items and you don’t want to miss any chance for your item to be found by a buyer. This includes all of the “optional” fields.

For original price I try to put the original price. If I do not know the original price I will use my best guess. In order to make a best guess you can look at similar items for sale on the company’s website, such as GAP usually sells their blouses for $48 on their website.

7) The Price is Right: Pricing is another huge area of debate on Poshmark. I typically price items with a little padding so there is room for offers and negotiation. I think if you price your items too low the buyer might assume something is wrong with the item or it’s very worn out. If you price too high it can steer shoppers away from your closet.

You can also look others who have sold your exact item on Poshmark and see how much the item sold for. Other considerations include condition of the item and age of the item, and in some cases, rarity. Mostshoppers on Poshmark are there to find affordable fashion. I do not price at retail. Most items are pre-owned, the buyer should not be paying full retail.

8) Share Your Items: After listing your items for sale, next the social sharing aspect of Poshmark kicks in. I learned over time that sharing my items is essential to selling them, as well as being active on the app. Sharing your items is basically Poshmark’s language for promoting or marketing your items.

Also share items to the Poshmark parties. You can set a sharing goal for yourself or monitor your Self-Shares over the past 30 days under your Poshmark stats to keep you accountable. Another tactic I like to use is to share my whole closet after every sale. Usually I try to share my items 2-3 times per day in reference tips to selling on Poshmark.

9) Use Free Shipping Supplies: Hands down one of my favorite Poshmark tips is to take advantage of the free shipping supplies provided by USPS! Not only are the supplies free but they are sturdy, durable and work perfectly for mailing clothing and accessories.

Most of my Poshmark sales are single items. I primarily use the Tyvek Mailers from USPS. If I sell a larger item or a bundle I will use a box. There are a variety of Priority Mail supplies available from USPS. You can order the supplies online and have them shipped to your home. Alternately you can go into your local post office for boxes.

10) Become a Poshmark Ambassador: There are guidelines under your user account about what is required to become a Poshmark ambassador. I would highly recommend trying to become one if you are serious about selling on Poshmark.

The biggest benefit I have seen is with follower growth. Once you are an ambassador Poshmark automatically encourages new users to follow you. This equals more eyes on your items and your closet which is additional exposure.

11) Stay Active on the App: If you receive a question on one of your items, respond in a timely manner. Treat communication with shoppers like you are at your job or if you worked in a retail clothing store. I always strive to be polite and direct and respond quickly.

You can adjust notification settings on Poshmark and your smartphone so that you receive a notice when someone comments on one of your items. This is helpful in case you are on the go or not always on the app. You can also set up email notifications.

12) List New Items Daily: Lastly, and maybe my biggest piece of advice is to list new items daily on Poshmark. When I list regularly my sales stay steady.

Poshmark is great because you can get out what you put into the app. My goal is typically 2 items per day on weekdays. If I don’t have any new items to list I will delete and relist old items for exposure. This has helped old items sell many times for me.
