These Celebrities Own the Most Homes Around the World (1)

In year 3 of the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s never been a more tempting time to drool over real estate you can’t afford. Just imagine how much easier all this staying home could be if “staying home” meant staying at a massive Beverly Hills mansion with a pool and movie theater. Hollywood stars and billionaires, of course, don’t have to imagine (despite what Gal Gadot may have you think). Stars like Oprah Winfrey and Leonardo DiCaprio have long set the standard for what our dream homes would look like, but there’s an extra-elite level of celebrity real estate ownership that Winfrey and DiCaprio have reached too: those who own five or more homes.

Sure, you’d be hard-pressed to find a celebrity who doesn’t own at least two homes, but one particular club of homeowners has truly gone above and beyond in their pursuit of property. Unlike Ellen DeGeneres, another famous celeb-slash-real estate tycoon, these stars are notable for holding on to their homes, rather than selling them for a profit as DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have done with over ten different mansions. Taylor Swift, who has a notably sentimental streak, owns eight homes total, none of which we can quite imagine her giving up. And while Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, two more famous landowners, are no stranger to upgrading their living spaces, they’ve so totally customized their homes over the years that we can’t imagine it would be an easy flip.

As a result, these celebs in the five-and-over club have a home in every port where they may want to travel (and private jets to take them between manses). Lockdown who? Read on for all the stars whose real estate portfolios are basically a passport to the world.

  • Bill & Melinda Gates

These Celebrities Own the Most Homes Around the World (4)

While we’ll have to see how all this property shakes out in the divorce, it’s no surprise that Bill and Melinda Gates owned quite the real estate collection.Their primary residence is a $123 million mansion in Medina, Washington nicknamed “Xanadu,” which boasts over 66,000 square feet, 7 bedrooms, 24 bathrooms, a trampoline room, automatic temperature controls, a 60-foot swimming pool, and so much more.

Gates also owns two horse farms: one worth $8.7 million in Wellington, Florida (4.8 acres, 4 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms), where he quickly bought out the neighbors as well, and one in California: Rancho Paseana, purchased for $18 million from Jenny Craig (228 acres).

Finally, Gates purchased a Wyoming ranch in 2009 that was listed at $8.9 million (492 acres) and sits close by to Yellowstone National Park, a $12.5 million mansion in Palm Desert in 1999, and a $43 million San Diego mansion with 120 feet of private oceanfront in 2020, rounding out his 6 homes.

  • Leonardo DiCaprio

These Celebrities Own the Most Homes Around the World (5)

Our boy Leo has been at the top of the acting world for decades, and the man has made it clear that real estate is one of his great loves with how he spends his money. As his recent role inOnce Upon a Time in Hollywoodwould suggest, the actor can’t resist the allure of California property most of all, where he owns four of his homes, in addition to a $1.75 million private island in Belize where he’s building an eco-resort and a $12 million NYC high-rise apartment overlooking the Hudson River and featuring 1,000 square feet of outdoor space alone.

His California properties include a $5.23 million Palm Springs mansion (7,000 square feet, 6 bedrooms, 7.5 baths, tennis court, and guesthouse), a $2 million Hollywood Hills home formerly owned by Madonna (12,530 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 8.5 baths), and a $23 million home on Malibu’s exclusive Paradise Cove (1.76 acres and 90 feet of beach frontage, though the existing home on the estate was only 600 square feet).

In 2021 alone, DiCaprio bought Gwen Stefani’s old home in Los Feliz from Jesse Tyler Ferguson for $7.1 million, sold his father’s Los Feliz mansion for $5.75 million, bought another Malibu home this time for $13.8 million, and, finally, dropped $10 million on a Beverly Hills estate.

  • Kim Kardashian & Kanye West

These Celebrities Own the Most Homes Around the World (6)

Between the Gates’ and Kimye, we’re starting to think a massive real estate portfolio may be a bad omen for celebrity couples! But as the couple divvies up their various homes, it’s worth taking a dive into just how many properties there are to split up — not including the home West just purchased across the street from Kardashian, post-divorce.

The crown jewel of Kimye’s real estate collection — their $60 million main home in Hidden Hills, profiled in Architectural Digest — started the hub around which they would buy their next two properties: an adjacent $2.9 million lot (4.5 acres, 3900-square-foot house) and an adjacent $2.7 million lot (1.5 acres) where Kim has hinted she wants to build horseback-riding stables for her kids. It’s been reported that Kim will stay in this home after the divorce, hence West buying a house across the street.

In recent years, the couple had also invested in a couple of Wyoming ranches that became West’s primary residence as he and Kardashian separated, paying $12 million for their first ranch (4,500 acres) and $14.5 million for the second (6,713 acres including a 12,000 square-foot-home). In Oct. 2021, nine months after Kim filed for divorce, West listed the first ranch on the market.

The Kardashian-Wests also owned a home in La Quinta, where the couple dropped $6.3 million on two acres of land to build a home near the popular golf resort, where Kris and Kylie Jenner own homes as well.

  • Oprah Winfrey

These Celebrities Own the Most Homes Around the World (7)

We have a lot to get through here, so we’ll dive right in. Winfrey spends most of her time at her $50 million Montecito home (23,000 square feet and not far from Meghan Markle), where she lives with Stedman Graham. Not far from that is her Seamair Farm Estate, a horse farm she purchased for $29 million seated between the mountains and the beach. And just because she loves Montecito so much, she bought another $6.85 million home there too previously owned by Jeff Bridges.

Next, Winfrey has a $8.275 million Orcas Island, Washington home (41 acres, 7,303-square-feet living space, 8 beds, 6 baths, and 3,000 feet of private beach), a $14 million Telluride, Colorado home (3.25 acres, 8,700-square-feet living space, 5 beds, 6.5 baths), and a stunning 163-acre estate in Maui, Hawaii, estimated to be worth roughly $30 million.

  • Taylor Swift

These Celebrities Own the Most Homes Around the World (8)

Taylor Swift may have been living out of London with boyfriend Joe Alwyn for the last few years, but her real estate portfolio is all American. Though she was born in Pennsylvania, Swift spent her adolescence in Nashville, Tennessee, where she owns two homes: a $1.99 million condo (3,240 square feet), and a $2.5 million mansion (4 beds, 4.5 baths, guest house and pool).

If you’ve ever heard about Swift’s legendary 4th of July parties, you’ll also know she owns a $17.75 million estate in Watch Hill, Rhode Island (12,000-square-feet, 7 beds, 9 baths). And though Los Angeles doesn’t seem to be her favorite place to live, she maintains a residence there too: a $25 million Georgian estate in Beverly Hills (10,982-square-feet, 7 beds, 10 baths).

Then, we get to Swift’s newest love: New York City. Her first buy was a $20 million set of Tribeca penthouses (8,309 square feet, 10 beds, 10 baths), followed by another $9.75 million apartment in the same building. A year prior, she’d purchased a $20 million Tribeca townhouse — and she’s getting dangerously close to owning the whole block.

  • Jeff Bezos

These Celebrities Own the Most Homes Around the World (9)

As of January 2022, Jeff Bezos is the second-richest person in the world after Elon Musk. And he sure shops for houses like it. Prior to their 2019 split, he and MacKenzie Bezos shared two Beverly Hills homes: a $12.9 million mansion (4,568-square-feet, 4 beds), and a $24.45 million adjacent mansion (11,891-square-feet, 7 beds, 7 baths).

In Medina, Washington, he owns a set of properties worth $10 million: one boasts 20,6000-square-feet of living space, while the other has 8,300 (both have 5 beds, 4 baths). He also bought another adjacent property listed at $53 million (24,000-square-feet, 6 beds, 6 baths).

In Washington, D.C., Bezos owns a $23 million Kalorama residence (27,000-square-feet, 10 beds, 11 baths, and near the Obamas). In West Texas, he owns 300,000 acres of land based around “Corn Ranch,” a 30,000 acre ranch house originally bult in the 1920s.

Bezos also owns four properties are in New York City: a $7.65 million set of three Lincoln Square apartments, to which he later added a $5.3 million adjacent unit (1,725-square-feet). And in Nov. 2021, he and Lauren Sanchez purchased a $78 million beachfront home in Maui that’s basically a private corner of the island.
