All truck manufacturers like to tout their long lasting trucks, but how long do these trucks last in the real world? ISeeCars.com analyzed approximately 15.8 million vehicles sales in 2019 and narrowed in on those vehicles that had over 200,000 or 300,000 miles at the time of sale.
This list is focused on light trucks. In other words, this includes midsize and full-size half-ton trucks. Heavy duty pickup trucks were not part of this study. The longest lasting pickup may surprise you. See the list below for trucks most likely to reach 200,000 miles.
Here is the list for trucks that are most likely to reach 300,000 miles.
The top-ranked Toyota Tundra and the second-ranked Honda Ridgeline are joined by four other trustworthy trucks. Trucks have a 2.2% sector average of lasting 200,000 miles, which is roughly double the average for all vehicles, according to Brauer.
Among these contenders, heavy-duty models dominate the field, but notable names like the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and Chevrolet Avalanche also boast a higher-than-average likelihood of crossing the quarter-million-mile mark.
The most reliable subcompact SUV is the Chevrolet TrailBlazer (8.9 reliability rating), with the Honda CR-V being the most reliable small and compact SUV (9.0 reliability rating). The Toyota 4Runner ranks #1 for the most reliable midsize SUVs (9.4 reliability rating).
Toyota dominates the list with 10 of the top 20 models able to reach over 230,000 miles. The top 2 models with the longest lifespans are Toyota SUVs, with the Sequoia and Land Cruiser both enduring nearly 300,000 miles over the past 20 years.
Top crossover SUVs according to mechanics include the Toyota Highlander and Lexus GX luxury SUV. The GX was named Consumer Report's most reliable vehicle in 2022.
Once a used truck crosses the 200,000-mile threshold, it can often be on its last legs. You might get lucky and be able to keep a used truck out on the road for another 50,000 or even 100,000 miles. But you might also find that it begins to break down on you much sooner when it has over 200,000 miles.
If you want a long-lasting truck, look no further. The Tacoma is the most reliable truck on this list by a long shot. It topped the RepairPal and Consumer Reports reliability ratings and was the highest-ranking midsize truck in the J.D. Power study. This makes it the reliability king of trucks.
