The Richest Town in America is Home to the World’s Most Famous Female Tech Billionaire (1)

Home to tech billionaires like Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and Google’s Eric Schmidt, not to mention the headquarters of both companies, as well as Tesla, the richest town in America remains Atherton, California, according to Bloomberg’s 2020 Richest Places Index. The Silicon Valley town, which is just eight minutes from Stanford University, isn’t only renowned for its wealthy tech entrepreneurs, though; it’s known for its large, private lots and lavish homes, too. One look at the real estate in the area, and it’s safe to say that Atherton is a sanctuary for the mega-wealthy.

Speaking of wealth, Atherton’s average household income is a mind-boggling $525,324, up $74,638 since 2017, when it was last recorded by Bloomberg. Atherton isn’t the only town touting notable wealth, though. The top 20 richest towns in America all boast average household incomes above $300,000, while the top five ring up above $400,000.

Moving from West to East, America’s second richest town is Scarsdale, New York, which is just 35 minutes outside of New York City. Known for its Tudor-style architecture, Scarsdale homes typically cost $1,200,515, according to Zillow. Of course, not all of America’s wealth is centered on the West and East coasts. Surprisingly, three of the 20 richest towns in America are in the Midwest, two are in Texas, and one is in Colorado. Of the remaining top 20 richest towns in America, one is nestled just outside the nation’s capital, one is in Florida, one is in Arizona, six are in the New York Tri-State Region, and two more are in California, one of the richest states in the U.S.

Bloomberg compiled its Richest Places Index using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, evaluating inflation-adjusted household income data for all U.S. “places,” defined by the Census Bureau as having a minimum of 2,000 households. It then ranked each by average household income. To even make the top 100, towns need an average household income of more than $220,000. Keep reading to learn more about the top 20 richest towns in America.
