John Chester's The Biggest Little Farm picture book series is based upon his award-winning documentary film and the Emmy Award-winning short films that have been featured on Oprah's “Super Soul Sunday.” Beautifully illustrated by Jennifer L.

Apricot Lane Farms was founded in 2011 by John and Molly Chester, and today spans 234 acres of countryside in Moorpark, California, just 40 miles north of Los Angeles.

The film was acquired by The Exchange for international distribution. A sequel special, The Biggest Little Farm: The Return, was released in 2022 on Disney+.

Inspired by their pet dog, a Los Angeles couple raises the money to start an eight-year adventure of triumph and heartbreak in biodiverse farming.

That sounds like the plot of a quirky indie comedy, but it's actually a true story, one that's now told in a documentary called The Biggest Little Farm, which chronicles the first eight years of the Chesters' new life.

The farmer tries to get her healthy before they arrive, but unfortunately, the 17 babies are born sooner than they hoped. When Emma develops a fever and cannot care for the babies, the farmer takes them into the house.

Filmmaker John Chester and his wife Molly Chester, a culinary writer, trade city life to start their own farm on a stretch of depleted soil outside Los Angeles. Part of their inspiration is to offer a better, outdoor life for their rescue dog, Todd.

What is Molly's dream in The Biggest Little Farm? ›

Molly is a chef who has long dreamed of growing her own food for cooking, but money has always got in the way of her dream. John and Molly adopt Todd, a rescue dog, who never gets used to living in an apartment, and they're eventually evicted because of Todd's barking.

The film documented some challenges with traditional farming, such as snails eating tree leaves or birds pecking at fruit. Another problem was a coyote destroying many chickens without eating them. By taking a “problem” into context, or into the food web, we can learn from nature.

Second, the farm was Molly's dream, but the movie quickly places John at its center and reduces Molly to the often-peripheral role of worrier and Earth Mother. Finally, there is only an oblique reference to the fact that Apricot Lane Farms has a staff of 60. This makes it a small big farm, not a big small one.

Apricot Lane farm residents include pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, guinea hens, horses, highland cattle, and one brown swiss dairy cow named “Maggie.” Many of which, you will meet in the BIGGEST LITTLE FARM.
