Tesla has broken ground on a much-anticipated lithium refinery in Texas. The automaker will pour US$375 million into the plant near Corpus Christi as it aims to produce lithium, crucial for its electric vehicle batteries, closer to home, CNBC reports. CEO Elon Musk says the refinery will churn out enough lithium for 1 million vehicles a year, cementing Tesla's status as the largest lithium producer in North America. Lithium — 60% of of which is refined in China — is "a fundamental choke point" hampering EV development, Musk said at Monday's groundbreaking.
