What is the difference between fringe and tassel? ›

What's the difference between fringe and tassels? A tassel is a ball-shaped bunch of plaited or or loose dangling threads with a cord at one end from on which the tassel is hung. Fringe is a decorative border which is fixed rather than hung, and is usually sewn on rather than tied.

In modern fabrics, fringe is more commonly made separately and sewn on. Modern "add-on" fringe may consist of wool, silk, linen, or narrow strips of leather. The use of fringe is ancient, and early fringes were generally made of unspun wool (rather than spun or twisted threads). There are many types of fringe.

To clarify, fringing is when you purposely want your fabric to fray. But you want it to stop fraying at some point, and that point is where you sew a wall; “No fraying beyond this point” so to speak. Sew a narrow zigzag stitch on your marked line. This is the “wall” no fringe shall go beyond.

The only difference between Fringes and Bangs is where you live. If you live in America you have bangs, if you live anywhere else in the world you have a fringe....the term bangs originally referred to a haircut bang-off (straight across at the front), although the term is now applied to diverse forms of hair stylings.

First, Dry and Style Your Bangs.

Since wet hair shrinks up when it dries, if you cut your bangs when wet, you could end up with bangs that are way too short. Blow-dry and style your fringe the way that you usually wear it, whether that's swept off to one side or straight down.

Typically it's best to get regular trims every 2-3 weeks depending on your hair texture. Plan ahead and make that appointment to avoid having your bangs hang over your eyes. And whatever you do, do not try to trim them yourself.

Buckskins are often trimmed with a fringe – originally a functional detail, to allow the garment to shed rain, and to dry faster when wet because the fringe acted as a series of wicks to disperse the water – or quills.

Fabrics like linen, burlap, gauze, wools and bouclés are ideal candidates. The looser the weave, the easier the fringing process. To create a simple fringe, be sure your project edge is cut parallel to the fabric grain.

To add your finished fringe to a cushion, just sew it into the seam as is. For an upholstery trim, cut open the folded edge of the trim, trim to about 0.5cm and iron open with an iron. This creates a 'base' from which to fix your fringe to the furniture.

A twisted fringe looks professional and prevents your fringe from becoming straggly over time. Twisting your fringe occurs BEFORE wet finishing to allow the twist to set properly in the washing process. If you are considering a twisted fringe, you will need to calculate this into your warp.

Anyways, to trim the fringe on a newly woven item, I use a rotary cutter and mat, with a clear ruler. I love it! So much better than scissors and a ruler. If you don't own a mat/ruler/rotary cutter, it is well worth asking to use your friend's/mother-in-law's/neighbor's to do this job.
