What is campus sustainability? ›

Campus Sustainability Best Practices: A Resource for Colleges and Universities primarily focuses on energy and climate change, but also includes topics such as campus waste, food, and water usage; all of which can impact climate change.

Install Recycling Bins

The easiest and most common way that people participate in sustainability is by recycling. Installing bins across campus makes recycling as easy as possible. Students sometimes won't go out of their way to find a recycling bin, but if there is one nearby, they're more likely to recycle.

However, it actually refers to four distinct areas: human, social, economic and environmental – known as the four pillars of sustainability.

To be eligible for admission, you must have at least a 3.0 (B) grade point average.

A 3.2 GPA isn't necessarily a cutoff; UCSF states that nontraditional applicants shouldn't be discouraged or take courses exclusively to boost their GPA. We do, however, recommend applying with a GPA higher than 3.2, ideally close to the median of 3.88 or higher is ideal.

With 42% of surveyed students saying they were very concerned about the effects of climate change and over 80% of all survey participants considering it somewhat important or very important that their college prioritize sustainability, it is clear that this is an area for growth and focus for universities nationwide.

With the pandemic restrictions now loosening, colleges are aiming to prioritize sustainability once again. Making sustainability a priority is increasingly important for higher education institutions as sustainable practices on campus are an important factor to both current and prospective students.

A campus that takes sustainability seriously, both in its academic programs and in its master planning, is more likely to be a vibrant, caring, innovative, creative, and resilient place to live, work, and study.

Sustainability is the idea that humans must interact with the environment in a way that ensures there will be enough resources left for future generations.

In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
