Superday Thank You Email (2024)

So I had my first superday yesterday. Just wondering if it's commonplace to send thank you emails to the people I met. In the past, I've had boutique interviews and sent a thank you to the 1/2 ppl who interviewed me. Yesterday I had 7 small interviews w/about 12 different people total so it seems like a lot. Maybe I should email the 2-3 that I connected with the most?

Sending a Thank You Email After a Super Day Interview

Sending a thank you email after an interview is seen as necessary to some, and unimportant to others. In spite of that, there is a consensus that a thank you email will not improve your chances of being hired in any measurable way. The decision to hire you was probably made before you left the room.

Even though, you will likely gain nothing from sending a thank you email (even a reply) you should it anyway. The motive here when sending this email is to mitigate risk. For instance, you finish with an interview and your performance was average. You're exhausted from the interview process and you decide not to send thank you emails. The recruiter in this hypothetical situation views you as inconsiderate of others time and dings you. The point is that some people might expect a thank you email while simultaneously regarding them as valueless.

Sil - Corporate Development Associate:

You should always send a thank you email after an interview. There is no upside in doing so, but by not sending thank you emails after an interview, you run the risk of running into that one interviewer who does care.

For simplicity's sake, you'll want to send a follow up thank you email within 24 hours. Do not make it overly complex. Thus, the email should not exceed four sentences.

CompBanker - Private Equity Vice President:

Please, don't send me a thank you note that tells me about all your accomplishments. I received a thank you note that was one line of "thank you" and eight lines of "and by the way, here is how great I am." That actually completely turned me off to the candidate. Are you thanking the person, or are you thanking yourself?

Thank the person for their time and add a sentence or two referencing a high point of the conversation. Also, remember to thoroughly proof read the email. Sending a thank you note that has basic grammar, spelling, formatting errors may cause you some problems. Make sure to double check the spelling of names as well. Do not send the email within odd hours of the night.

GenghisKhan - Investment Banking Managing Director:

Last Saturday, I swear I got at least a dozen between 11 pm and 2 am. Please remember that I keep my blackberry close by because I'm running a number of deals at any particular moment, and try to be responsive to a number of very demanding CEOs, CFOs and Board members.

Those are the simple do's and don'ts of a follow-up email.

In short:

  • Thank them for their time.
  • Mention a high point in the conversation.
  • Mention something relevant about the firm if applicable.
  • Do not exceed four sentences.
  • Do not send thank you emails at odd hours.
  • Send the email within twenty-four hours, preferably the following morning.
  • Proof read
