What is a stock item and a non-stock item? ›

Stock and Non- Stock. The stock items are those items for which there is a regular demand, regular drawl or consumption and there is a regular recoupment. Non-stock items are required occasionally and not on regular basis.

Stock Items would almost always be Inventory Items because you would want to track the inventory of these items. Non-Stock Items are items that you don't keep quantities on hand as a regular part of business.

Non-stock material includes materials that are not managed on an inventory basis (for example, small parts such as nails) though physically in stock.

Examples of non-inventory items include office furniture and supplies, cleaning supplies, equipment rentals, internet or travel expenses. Non-inventory items can also include small or incidental items necessary for daily operations but do not fit into a specific inventory category.

Non-stock items are products not physically kept on hand for a company to sell. They could include dropship items from a third-party vendor, service fees such as website design or digital products.

A good example of MTS would be a company that manufactures t-shirts. The company knows that it generally sells more t-shirts in the summer than any other time of year. So it will produce a certain amount of t-shirts in advance and keep them in stock until customers purchase them.

Non-stock inventory refers to items or materials that are not regularly kept in stock by a company but are acquired or ordered as needed to fulfill specific customer orders or requirements, often sourced from suppliers or manufacturers upon demand.

Stock Items. Stock items are defined as material resources that are held in storerooms and issued to activities that require the materials to be completed. The stock item record determines whether or not the type of stock can be purchased, repaired, tracked, and so on.

By definition, non-inventory items do not have a physical count within Business Central. The system is designed not to track the quantities on hand, on order, or sold of these items, as they are not expected to be part of the inventory that the business manages or controls.

Raw materials constitute all the basic components used to produce the finished goods. It is categorized as inventory when the components are used by your business to produce something that can be sold to end user. Raw material is considered stock when the raw material is sold to another business.

Go to the “Custom Fields” section and click “Add Custom Field.” Configure the custom fields according to your requirements, such as adding fields for specific attributes or unique identifiers. Save and activate the non-inventory item to make the custom fields available for use.

Non-inventory resale item records are used to track something you buy and then sell for a profit, but do not stock. If you need to change an inventory item to another type, you have a few options. You can simply sell what you have in stock. When the quantity is zero, make the inventory item inactive. Then you can create a new non-inventory or service item to replace it.
