What does retired in place mean? ›

Retired in place is a slang term used to describe an employee who works just hard enough to not be fired and waits until he or she is eligible to take retirement benefits.

Is retired the same as unemployed? ›

People who reported being currently, or recently, looking for work, are counted as unemployed. People who are not currently employed, and are not looking for work, are counted as not in the labor force. This latter group may include students, parents, caretakers, or retired people, for example.

Some places have benefits if you meet the retirement hurdle. A pension, lifetime health insurance, etc. For most of us, retirement is a way of saying you quit, but don't currently plan to get another job. Usually there's a longer notice period, like 3 months.

The full retirement age is 66 if you were born from 1943 to 1954. The full retirement age increases gradually if you were born from 1955 to 1960 until it reaches 67. For anyone born 1960 or later, full retirement benefits are payable at age 67.

If you delay taking your benefits from your full retirement age up to age 70, your benefit amount will increase. If you start receiving benefits early, your benefits are reduced a small percent for each month before your full retirement age.

(5) “retired member of the armed forces” means a member or former member of the armed forces who is entitled, under statute, to retired, retirement, or retainer pay on account of service as a member.

Some weren't working AT ALL. They referred to these staff as “retired on active duty.” This is a US military term, used across the service branches, to reflect that a member is proactively NOT doing the work they are 1) supposed to do and 2)committed to do.
