Times interest earned is an outdated ratio. It has been replaced by debt service coverage ratio because one expects cash flows from operations to service both interest and capital and not just interest.

Indispensable as a snapshot ....and the comparison of ratio trends over time and their projection forward is important too, .......oh, and don't forget absolutes matter too (with the most important one at present seeming to be volume of debt and who it is from!!).
