Human beings are a social animal who needs to sustain in society and values help them to grow in society. Human values are the generosity that one individual keeps in mind while interacting with the other one which includes respect, affection, appreciation, love and many other things towards another person. Schools are one of the important places where students spend their major time and learn most of the things from there whether it is through the curriculum, teachers or friends.

During ancient times, religion was only considered important in our societies. As a result, the education system was majorly based on religion and people used to stay in Gurukuls or Asharams for learning. But with the evolution in time the modern education system was introduced and the meaning of value and the way to inculcate it also changed. Introducing values-based education in schools creates a stable and solid learning environment that augments academic achievement along with infusing social and relationship skills that help them to always grow.

Ways to inculcate values in the present system of education

School plays a major role in any student’s life and has an immense and significant impact on their morale and personality development. In schools teachers and friends are the two-person who have an exerted influence to build up our values. Educational institutions should include the value education for children it can be in a formal way or in an informal way. There are certain steps which can be included in the schools to educate students about the value:

1. Educating to be answerable

Every student should be responsible for their own actions and words. They should know that they are accountable for their actions whether they are positive or negative. They should learn to respect and how to treat other people. Being kind is one of the key values.

2. Engaged in being a role model

What we see is what we follow the most. After family, teachers act as a role model for the students as they are the one who is seen more in the schools. Students behave in the same manner how their role model is behaving. Students learn the actions of their respective role models and apply that in their behavior with their peers.

3. Guiding about basic morals and values

Some of the basic morals and values are taught in the home but some of them are taught by the teachers/ role models. The teachers should put attention to teaching it through various methods. The method used to be creative and interesting to bring and retain the interest of the students. It can be some sort of activity, the narrative that motivates them to get indulge in the good deed behavior.

4. Acknowledgment and admiration

The teacher should appreciate and always try to motivate students for their good work. They should also encourage them to develop pro-social behavior. Students should be taught to help others and be kind and honest with others.

Why it is important to inculcate values in students?

With the introduction of modern learning, students are involved only in the competitive run. They barely know about the social and moral values, how to live their lives, get engaged in doing for the interest of the country. It helps them to analyze what they want after their schooling. It intensifies the student’s knowledge in a way so that they can dwell well in society keeping in mind all the norms and values of the society.

Teaching about inculcation of values in school help the students to develop their skills and their overall personality. They get to know about their obligations, different cultures, what is right and what is wrong. Values help to have an understanding of what is morally and ethically right and wrong. It defines a proper way to behave in society.

1. Integrating values in the course of study

Treating value learning as a subject or having its chalk talk separately turns to be boring for students. Teachers are very well aware of how and what can bring in the interest of their students. So, they should indulge them to learn it in the way they would get involved. Some of the ways to incorporate it are to include values in the prayers, in certain subjects such as social science which depicts our values.

2. Integrating values in extracurricular activities

Education is not just about having a mark sheet or holding a degree it is all about to evolve the capacity of human intelligence so that they can be socially answerable and can be a part of a nation’s development. This all can only take place when childhood is embedded with the values and it should take place in the school itself. Co-curricular activities such as debate, story-writing or telling, dramas, etc are an appropriate way to teach about values.

3. Buildup value- consciousness through narratives

When the interaction takes place through stories it provides convenience to analyze why action is taken and what are its consequences and to bring a conclusion morally. It provides the ability to see if they would be in such a situation what might be their actions and compare the story with their own experience as to how to handle things with being morally correct.

4. Teaching values by integrating it in the games

Within the diverse curricular activities, games are one of the prominent ways to inculcate values in the students. Games are a very apt way to teach values as it indulges students very well and maintains their interest. During the games, students target the values they embrace and learn from each other. They get to know about different values and try to adapt it. Eg. Housie Games in this they put heads together and discuss to play it.

Conclusion- Values-based education is an essential part of students’ lives, it establishes an environment that helps them to grow in their academics as well as social and expertise. Values help in the formation of positive thinking. It helps in developing understanding and relationships between students and teachers. It also enhances attitudes and ways of looking at situations that help them to achieve their objectives and success in all the ups and downs.
