Should I knock down a robin's nest? ›

Never attempt to remove or relocate a nest if there are birds or eggs present. It is best to wait until after nesting season for any removal or relocation. Eggs in a nest without signs of the parents don't necessarily mean the nest has been abandoned.

While robins might repair or build on top of a previous nest, most of them build a new nest. This is best for many reasons. A used nest is a mess, stretched out and often home to insects or parasites and possibly poop. Take the nest down and the site will be ready for the next robin.

Robins have an extremely high rate of nest fidelity. I know “nest fidelity” sounds like an investment group, but it actually means that robins regularly return to the same breeding site each season.

If you come across, a fallen nest or featherless babies, replace the nest in an area closest to the original spot that is sturdy with the babies inside. If you have to put the babies back in the nest be sure the feet are tucked underneath the body.

If you move a robin's nest the parents will most likely abandon the nest, eggs and/or young. Here's why: Nest-site fidelity grows during the nesting season. The more time and energy the birds invest in the nest, the less likely they are to abandon it when disturbed.

A. Robins goes through the nest-building process each time they produce a new brood, so about two or three times a season. While robins might repair or build on top of a previous nest, most of them build a new nest for each "family" they raise.

How do you tell if a mother bird has abandoned her nest? ›

If you do not see any adults near the nest and there is no progress (no hatched eggs, etc.) after four (or more) weeks, the nest may have been abandoned. For a nest containing young, often nestlings may appear to be abandoned when they are actually not.

A nest of chirping birds seems harmless until you have a bird's nest on your porch. Birds nesting are beautiful and exciting to watch from a distance. However, if they try to occupy your patio or some other part of your home, chances are you will want it removed as soon as possible.

Basic protection

All birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law and it is thus an offence, with certain exceptions (see Exceptions), to: Intentionally kill, injure or take any wild bird. Intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built.

During this time, the female will be sitting on her nest for the majority of the time day and night to keep things at the right temperature. During incubation, robins are quite active around the nest area.

We don't recommend that you move the nest; Birds will often abandon their nest if it is moved. Only in extreme circ*mstances should you consider relocating a nest, and if you do, it must be replaced very close, within a few feet of the original location. Once relocated, watch and make sure the parents are returning.

On The Nest

Babies Leave the Nest Before They Are Grown Up

There is no room in the nest for baby birds to stretch and strengthen their wings, and being out of the nest gives them practice foraging and learning their surroundings before they're fully grown. The parent birds do stay nearby to care for their chicks, however.

On average, most species of birds stay for 2-6 weeks in a single nest. But that's just an average. Usually, small songbirds leave the nest after just a few weeks. In contrast, the raptors stay in the nest for as long as 8-10 weeks.
