How to unlock read-only words? ›

Things You Should Know. Word files may be read-only due to Protected View, password protection, or file permissions in Windows or macOS. If you're using Windows, right-click the file, select "Properties," click the "Properties" tab, then remove the Read-only attribute.

Right-click on the Excel file and select "Properties." In the "General" tab, check if the "Read-only" attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and click "OK."

Right-click on the Word document you want to edit. Select the "Properties" option from the menu that appears. Navigate to the "General" tab. Uncheck the "Read-only" option.

Hit “Ctrl + F” on your keyboard. With your “Find” dialogue box now open, type in “enforcement”. You should either find w: enforcement=”1″ or w: enforcement=”on”. Replace the “1” with a “0” or the “on” with an “off” to unlock the Word document.

Upload your read-only PDF file to Acrobat to edit. If the file is protected, make sure you have the password information, then select Tools > Protect > Encrypt > Remove Security. Then you can edit. Save your file.

Check the document permissions: If you are unable to edit a document, it's possible that the document is set to read-only mode, which means you cannot make changes to it. To check the permissions of the document, open the File menu, select Info, and look for the Permission section.

Read-only is a file attribute which only allows a user to view a file, restricting any writing to the file. Setting a file to “read-only” will still allow that file to be opened and read; however, changes such as deletions, overwrites, edits or name changes cannot be made.
