Why did Google discontinue Google Glass? ›

While it gained generally positive reviews, the second edition turned out to be the final act for Google Glass. Four years later, Google discontinued the product amid cost-cutting measures, including the layoff of about 12,000 employees, in response to recession jitters.

The Drawbacks of Google Glass

Even Sitting: Because the glasses are weighted to one side, it does not take long for them to become uneven and start leaning one way very quickly. In fact, Google Glass does not last very long at an even state and will require continual fiddling to correct.

Google Glass enthusiasts will still be able to use their XR device and related software after the retirement date. However, Google will not release any future updates. Moreover, after September 15, 2023, Google will no longer provide ongoing support for the pre-installed Meet on Glass application.

Still, this new Project Glass model is better at addition than subtraction. While features have been added, the price hasn't dropped. At $1,500 (£1,000, about AU$1,589), Google's experimental wearable is exorbitantly priced for the average person.

The central dispute among members of Google X was whether Glass should be used as a fashionable device all the time or only for specific utilitarian functions. Google co-founder Sergey Brin wanted to release Glass to the public and have consumers provide feedback that Google X could use to improve the design.

Functionality: As already mentioned, Google Glass failed to offer much over smartphones and smartwatches save from the ability to capture video and photos from its wearer's POV. Google also failed to properly justify the device's existence and what problem it aimed to solve with the product.

Smart glasses ultimately did not gain momentum in the consumer market due to their lack of usability, high price point, and privacy issues. Also, consumers just did not want to wear clunky tech devices on their faces, which they felt did not offer them much value.

Glass also uses many existing Google applications, such as Google Maps and Gmail. Many developers and companies built applications for Glass, including news apps, facial recognition, exercise, photo manipulation, translation, and sharing to social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter.

The plastic cube just above your right eye enters you into the world of Glass. The display shows you a vast amount of information from the current time to your emails, pictures, video clips, search results, and much more.

Moreover, because the device uses Internet connections and Bluetooth, it is possible that the signal is intercepted. Public authorities, privacy invaders, and companies may use Google Glass to track objects and subjects that the user looks at.

While Glass should work with most Bluetooth-capable phones, for best results we recommend using Glass with an Android or iPhone phone. On Glass, in the Bluetooth card, select either Android or iPhone. Both options will allow Glass to pair with your device.

Google Glass also did not include Google's own facial recognition tech, but users were able to hack together their own version of the software to run on the devices.

Potential downsides: Eye strain: Prolonged use of any digital screen, including smart glasses, can cause eye strain due to focusing at a close distance for extended periods. This can lead to symptoms like headaches, blurred vision, and dry eyes.

Disadvantages of The Glass

It is brittle and rigid, and when subjected to stress, it breaks easily with insignificant strain. Broken pieces of Glass may cause grievous injury to the body. The Glass gets affected by hydrofluoric acid, and therefore etching is visible on the glass surface.
