How are PGA Tour Purses Divided?
- For most PGA Tour tournaments, the top 65 players that make the cut are paid from the purse, using the pga tour payout percentages listed below. This was new for 2019-20 season. Before 2019 the top 70 golfers made the cut and earnings.
- Major golf tournaments purse payouts and cut rules are slightly different that standard PGA Tour allocations.
- The Masters cut includes the top 50 players plus ties.
- The PGA Championship cut includes the top 70 players plus ties.
- The U.S. Open cut includes the top 60 players plus ties.
- The Open Championship cut includes the top 70 players plus ties.
- If golfers are tied, they split the earnings awarded to all finishing positions from their finisihing position plus the number of golfers golfers with whom they are tied. For example, two golfers tie for second, they split the money paid out to 2nd place and 3rd place.
- Amateurs do not receive earnings. For example, if an amateur places solo 3rd, they receive $0 and the 4th place golfer receives what would normally be awared to the 3rd place golfer. All other positions below 3rd also get bumped up by a place in terms of their earnings.
- Some PGA Tour events use a different formula than the standard pga tour payout percentages table below.
- If more than 65 players make the cut then the PGA Tour will throw in some extra cash, in addition to the normal purse, to payout any player finishing beyond 65th place
- Some major tournaments, like the Masters, will pay an appearance fee to golfers that miss the cut. Historically this has been around $10,000 USD. This is not considered official money, however, and therefore is not included in projected earnings or official earnings posted for your golf pool.
- Starting in 2019, the TOUR Championship was earnings were all considered FedExCup BONUS Money and not official earnings.
- Projected earnings are not guarnteed to match official earnings

As an enthusiast in golf and sports finance, I have in-depth knowledge and expertise in PGA Tour events, including their payout structures, methodologies, and the intricacies of money distribution among professional golfers. My understanding spans across various golf tournaments, including The Masters, The PGA Championship, The U.S. Open, The Open Championship (British Open), and the European Tour (DP World Tour). I've studied the nuances of the purse allocations, cut rules, and how projected earnings are calculated for these tournaments.
In analyzing PGA Tour and major championship payout percentages, I've observed specific patterns in how prize money is divided among players based on their finishing positions. For instance, the standard PGA Tour events generally allocate earnings to the top 65 players who make the cut, using a predetermined percentage breakdown for each position. Before the 2019-20 season, this number was the top 70 players.
The cut rules for major tournaments vary slightly:
- The Masters includes the top 50 players plus ties.
- The PGA Championship includes the top 70 players plus ties.
- The U.S. Open includes the top 60 players plus ties.
- The Open Championship includes the top 70 players plus ties.
The way tied positions affect earnings is also essential. In case of a tie, players split the combined earnings of the tied positions. For example, if two players tie for second place, they divide the prize money for the second and third positions equally.
Amateurs participating in these events don't receive monetary prizes. Instead, their finishing positions can affect the earnings of professional players. If an amateur places among the top positions, the subsequent professional player moves up in the earnings ranking accordingly.
Furthermore, variations exist in payout formulas for specific PGA Tour events, and additional cash might be added to the purse if more than 65 players make the cut.
Appearance fees, often around $10,000 USD historically paid to golfers missing the cut in some major tournaments like the Masters, aren't counted as official money and aren't included in projected or official earnings for golf pools.
Starting in 2019, the TOUR Championship earnings were classified as FedExCup BONUS Money and not included in official earnings.
Projected earnings, calculated based on the specified percentages, might not precisely match the final official earnings due to various factors.
Moreover, the European Tour (DP World Tour) also follows a similar pattern in terms of payouts, albeit with some variations across different tournaments. The standard payout percentages are predetermined for various finishing positions, usually considering the top 65 players and ties for money distribution.
I hope this comprehensive breakdown sheds light on the intricacies of PGA Tour and major tournament payouts, helping you understand the methodologies behind projected earnings and how the prize money is divided among professional golfers in these prestigious events.
