Geography
Panama is a country in Central America and forms the narrowest point between the Atlantic and the Caribbean. The land has a total area of 75,420 km² (29,120 mi²) and a total coastline of 2,490 km (1,547.2 mi). This land area is approximately 94% of the area of Maine. Panama is thus the 22nd biggest country in the Americas and in terms of area ranked 119th worldwide. More than half of all residents (69%) live within cities. Every ninth resident lives in Panama City alone.
Panama is comparatively low at an average elevation of 360 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Volcán Barú) is at 3,475 meters. The country has about 70 islands. There are direct national borders with the two neighboring countries Colombia and Costa Rica. The distance between New York City and the Capital Panama City is about 3,570 km (2,218 mi).

Climate in Panama
In Panama, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 29 and 32 degrees. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 22 °C in a month's average.

The difference between the urban area and the city proper alone can be considerable. Panama City, for example, has an urban population of 1,166,000. However, the actual proper city is much smaller with only 506,000 inhabitants. The difference to metropolitan regions, i.e. conurbations with several cities, is even greater.
