Paint, varnish, wax: what finish for wooden furniture? (2024)

When you want to protect new or renovated wooden furniture, the question of what finish to apply is often asked. There are various wood finishes available that we will present to you to help you choose. Take a look at our guide to interior wood finishes.

WHY CHOOSE A FINISH FOR WOODEN FURNITURE?

Despite being indoors, wooden furniture is regularly subjected to aggression (stains, water, humidity, rubbing). To keep them in good condition for as long as possible, it is important to protect them. Choosing a finish for wooden furniture depends on several criteria such as :

  • The finish you want to obtain: paints, varnishes and waxes do not have the same effect. It is important to define your preferences (satin finish, authentic and rustic finish, finish without relief, etc.) before choosing your wood furniture finishing product.

  • Your level of demand in terms of wood protection. Not all wood furniture preservatives have the same properties. It is important to define the room and the use you will make of your wooden furniture. The product to be chosen to protect your wooden furniture will not be the same for a wooden table in a dining room as for a decorative piece of furniture, for example.

Unprotected wooden furniture will deteriorate over time. They may chip, crack, stain or warp. A renovation that is costly in terms of time, energy and money will then be necessary. Protecting your wooden furniture from the outset is the best thing to do to ensure that it is in good condition without too much effort.

A NON-FILM-FORMING FINISH FOR WOODEN FURNITURE: WAX

WAX, A TRADITIONAL FINISH FOR WOODEN FURNITURE

Wax is a rather traditional product for wooden furniture. It gives a warm and authentic look. It is very effective if you want a colourless and satin finish for your wooden furniture. Anova Wood's Parquet & Furniture Wax CPM800 is applied in one to 3 coats depending on the finish you are looking for. You can polish it to give a shiny look to your wooden furniture.

Wax is a regularly maintained finish for wooden furniture. It is a protective product for wood. It will make your surface waterproof and stain resistant. However, wax is a rather fragile protection that requires regular maintenance. If you want a high level of protection against stains and stains for your furniture, wooden furniture varnishes may be suitable for you.

Good to know :Oil is also a non-film-forming finish for wooden furniture. We do not recommend it because of its difficulty of application. In fact, it must be applied very carefully so as not to obtain a greasy and sticky effect.

FILM-FORMING FINISHES FOR WOODEN FURNITURE

Film-forming finishes for wooden furniture create a film on the surface of the wood. The furniture is then highly resistant to stagnant water and stains.

VARNISH FINISH FOR ENHANCED PROTECTION

Varnishes are protective products for wooden furniture that offer enhanced protection against standing water, moisture, stains or blows. Within our range, we recommend the Worktop Varnish VPT500 for a colourless finish. If you prefer a stained varnish, you can opt for the Colour Wood Varnish VBC500 .

Compared to the waxed finish for wooden furniture, the protection offered by a varnish will be more durable over time. We recommend waxing especially for decorative purposes, to embellish a wooden piece of furniture while providing it with a certain degree of protection. For high protection (in damp rooms such as kitchens or bathrooms), we recommend that you choose a varnish.

The paint finish for a matt finish

Wood paints will effectively protect your wooden furniture from stains, stagnant water and rubbing. They will allow you to decorate your interior in a wide range of colours.

Unlike wood varnishes, which reveal the natural grain of the wood, paints opacify the wood. They are a very good option if you are looking for a satin and opaque finish for wooden furniture. It is the ideal product for renovating old furniture, masking defects or giving character to your interior.

The paints in the Anova Wood range are available in tinted version (Interior Wood Paint PBI900) et en version blanche White Interior Wood Paint BLI900). We have chosen to offer you a wide range of shades to enable you to protect wooden furniture while decorating it with the shade of your choice. In order to facilitate the maintenance of painted wooden furniture, our paints are washable. Wood paints are very popular products for restyling wooden furniture.
