On Tuesday, ADOR, which is the agency of K-pop group NewJeans, announced that the group has set a new Guinness World Record by becoming the fastest K-pop act to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify with their songs.
The previous record holder, according to the agency, was Jungkook, a singer from the K-pop group BTS, who took 409 days to achieve 1 billion streams on Spotify with three songs. However, Jungkook still holds the title of the fastest K-pop soloist to achieve this feat.
NewJeans has a total of six songs on the Spotify platform, which are named "Attention," "Hype Boy," "Cookie," "Hurt," "OMG," and "Ditto."
The feat comes less than a year since their official debut in July 2022. Sings like "Ditto" and "OMG" charted at No. 82 and No. 74 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, respectively. While "OMG" has the highest number of streams on the platform, with over 320 million plays.
NewJeans took only 219 days to achieve this feat. Apart from Jungkook, this record has also been held by Lisa from the group BLACKPINK, who held the title for 411 days starting from October 26, 2022.
"It was actually yesterday that they finished recording for the new album that is scheduled to be released this summer," Min Hee Jin, executive producer/CEO of NewJeans' label ADOR, told Billboard in early April.
"I wanted to break the stereotype that only certain styles of music would be able to succeed in the so-called mainstream industry. In the albums going forward, NewJeans will continue to strive to present something new and unique to exceed the expectations of their fans. NewJeans members keep growing and growing, and we can't wait to surprise the world again," he added.
