Amazon's New World has been a humbling experience for the developers of the game. Though mechanically sound on paper and in practice, New World has since its launch earned a reputation of being fundamentally broken. While Amazon Game Studios has ceaselessly toiled towards fixing the bugs, glitches, and exploits that plague the world of Aeternum, it also sets its gaze towards the future of the game, and whether or not that would bring a level cap increase with it.

Level caps are always an intriguing topic in MMO games, representing the simplest and most compelling way to gauge a player's power level, and many different MMOs each have their own philosophies on how to best tackle the subject. Games like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14 choose to increase their level cap with the introduction of new expansions, while games such as The Elder Scrolls: Online and Guild Wars 2 instead opt to keep the player's level cap stable while providing other avenues to expand upon their power. In the simplest of terms, one prioritizes a horizontal power progression, while the other prioritizes a vertical one.

In a recent interview about New World on PCGamesN, when asked about the long-term age of a server's population, game director Scot Lane made it known that Amazon Game Studios had no interest in increasing the level cap of the game yet. Given that New World is still quite young, and not without its fledgling problems and growing pains, it makes sense that the priority for the development team lies elsewhere.

In addition to explaining that it would entertain thoughts of raising the level cap in the future, Amazon Game Studios affirmed that allowing players to only create one character per server would influence them in creating secondary characters on other worlds – given that the way New World's factions and territory control systems work would provide them a vastly different experience.

Despite the current level cap being 60, the journey for most players does not end there, as the game allows players to progress in their power level in a linear way through bettering their equipment – of which the current gear score maximum in New World is 600. Though the game's progression as it stands is suitable, some players wonder if New World could make use of bonus level systems that would offer tangible, yet balanced rewards for the players who fill up their experience bars past the level cap.

New World is available now on PC.
